    Because they just work.
Because they don't ask silly questions.
Because they do everything for you.
Because everyone already knows how to use them.

These are teh arguments I get most commonly. The last one was from some bloke here at work, against whom I launched a massive argument based on me having been a daily computer user since a Speccy 48k in 1984-ish and still having no idea how a Mac works. He shut up and went away after that.

I don't really have a problem with Apple users... I just find the stereotypes prove true in most cases!!

Regardless of why - its a good job they do as Apple provide much needed competition for Windows and Android - and while its a matter of personal taste, I find the OSX GUI far easier to use than the Windows 10 - possibly because its still recognisable from the first Apple WIMP GUI on the 1984 Macintosh.

That and the (almost) perfect integration across all Apple's platforms.

Not sure how things stand nowadays, with Andy kind-of owned/dominated by Google and their insistence on using their services... but back in the earlier days, when it was open free-for-all, I had a similar debate.
The other party asserted that Apple was superior because, while all/most of their apps cost money, it ensured everything uploaded to the App Store was of high quality and would work perfectly, while also lacking much of the spam/adware/general tat.
I obviously preferred Andy because much of their stuff was free or very cheap, I assume as their way of undercutting Apple?

However, I'm wondering - If Apple were to stop doing iPhones, would Andy pick up their game and start charging more for only hosting much higher quality content? Despite having a much smaller market share (IIRC), is Apple's market model forcing Android down toward the gutter/low ground in order to succeed?

No idea about Windows, though. It works fine for me and I don't have any of the issues my Mac OS using friends seem to burst blood their vessels over.

I remember back in college when all the pcs were in use and one fancy look mac was free, I spent like 10 minutes trying to figure stuff out but everything just felt alien and obscure.

Yes, I had the same experience with an early Macintosh when the alternative were DOS based or mainframe. That was 11 years before W95.

Re: I really don't get why people buy apple products.

I personally wouldn't buy Apple anything right now - the laptops/desktops are nice but you can get equivalent/better spec and build quality for less elsewhere. I'm invested in the Android ecosystem so the phones are a non-starter for me (I do have a company iPhone, which is alright but not amazing).

The only place I'd be tempted is a tablet, I've got an iPad air (work again) and it runs rings around the Android tablets I've had. Excellent build, decent performance and a nice screen. For web browsing, netflix and a few timewasters it's great.

Ipads and iphones etc do work quite simply.

But itunes doesn't ....and never has.. and that's where I leave this alone

ditto. Similar experience in the win98 era. Gave up and haven't touched Apple since save for an embarassing attempt to use someone else's macbook once.

Apple products work until they don't and then you need to go through hell to get apple to sort it out. Itunes is the only thing I like about apple though.

I think Jobs created a tech cult and understood how to manipulate customer loyalty. He was also a visionary and their products are stylish. I enjoyed that Steve Jobs film with Fassbender, not sure how real it was, but interesting.

Products that work until they don’t is a pretty accurate description of anything!

Problems with OSX are fairly easy to fix - basically BSD unix (one of the big pluses, a lot of UNIX tools like ssh and sftp are built in). Hardware problems - when they happen - just means taking them into an Apple store - or a third party repairer.

Some repairs are possible at home, but things like laptops can be tricky to get into.

Re: I really don't get why people buy apple products.

From my experience it's down to people liking the looks and feel of their products and/or preferring the UI design. Another set of users think Windows is unreliable and crap and fiddly to use and another set don't like Microsoft as a company. There were also cases of certain Mac OS specific programmes people thought were better than the Windows equivalents and certain cases where the software would run better on Macs.

In the video he posted before this he showed that apple are quite abrasive to third party repairers and have tried to sue them...Linus posted a video recently about how his multi thousand dollar imac had a broken screen and apple flat out refused to fix it for any amount of money.

Yes, but that damaged occurred while he was stripping down a non-user serviceable device for a YouTube video. He wasn’t an authorised Apple repairer.

I’ve read the pros and cons of the argument that Apple should be obliged to repair it. Maybe Apple did offer to repair it, but the cost of repair they quoted exceeded the cost of a new machine.

But we don’t really have all the facts, only his interpretations.

Unless he lied in the video, he claimed he offered to pay whatever it would cost to have it repaired. The issue seemed to be that Apple released a brand new product without any spare part inventory to support it. The spares simply don't exist yet.
