I keep on getting tempted by the 12" ibook, but I don't really need a laptop at the moment.

i didn't need a laptop either but sold my G4 tower and got one, best thing i've done i think, nice and portable and plenty fast, was playing RTCW on it (with external mouse of course) and plays nice.

12 ibook with 512 ram is fantastic.
You do need a laptop you just don't know it.
It's so good to use all around the house.
I wouldn't want to be destbound now.

The single thing holding me back is the costs involved - I've just specced a LGC775 based 2.8GHz P4 w/512MB RAM rig for use as a family pc for £280. A Mac mini starts at £339, for old tech (G4), a stupidly small amount of RAM, and a slow hard drive.

Sort the pricing out and I'll be the first to put an order in for one.

Think i settled on a power book for the fact i can take it with me

It's the little things that have sold it to me.

plug a usb flash drive in and with in 3 secs it's ready to use (os 9.2 imac)

plug a fw device in and it's allmost instant to use (os 9.2 imac)

boot up takes a while, but shut down/suspend is instant

also full laiden imac boot up mem usage 52 meg to xps 150+ meg once you have every thing installed

now compare this with telltubby XP........

the apple pro keyboard is a godsend to work on and it feels like it can take a batterning.

the mouse is a work of art form meets function, even the small speakers in the imac produce decent audio, need i go on ?

why o why as it been allowed to get to the state it's at.

Thats a stupid comparison, try and make a pc the same sized as a mac mini and then come back with the price

a mini itx would be more expensive and noisier for starters, and lets not go into build quality.

I have to agree there, the only thing close to the size of the mini is a cappucino mocha pc, however, I think it resembles a fan heater. Also theres a new generation of PC motherboards called nano-itx, which are slighty smaller than the mini logic board, however they are seriously underpowered....VIA eden 1GHz compared with a G4 1.4GHz. I have a mac mini myself, and even tho it can be slow sometimes, I have friends who have upgraded it to 1GB (Buy 256mb from apple then upgrade yourself) and the blighter runs perfectly. After all, I'm a PC user as well, however a mac for £300 (yeah, student discount!!) I couldnt resist!

The thing is, the size doesn't bother me. I have the space for a nice mATX tower, and I'll be damned if I'm paying extra to chuck 2 year old hardware into a small box . . .

You're right in a way, thats why I use both a PC and a mac mini along with a KVM switch and netgear hub. Of course I'll use my pc for gaming etc, but the mini is perfectly silent, and I use it for internet, email, music, movies and dvds, without the annoying buzz from the pc.

to me, the mac mini is a very nice machine, quick, quiet and very stable machine, some people like them some don't, to me it's liek the windows and linux debate, buy (or not buy) what you prefer, instead of saying it's crap.

Nobody is forcing any1 to buy or not buy something.

Don't like it, don't buy it, same applies to linux and windows
