    Got a Mac mini...

I went to the AppleCenter here in Leeds like I normally do to pick up some blank DVDs (just convenient location wise) and I ended up walking out with a new mini.

Picked up the 1.42Ghz model with 1gig o' ram, AE/BT and SD. Taking this home for Mom to use upstairs. I was quite impressed by its performance in store - better than I expected and for basic use I think I'll handle pretty well.

Will post back later once I have it set up and see how it goes

    Mike

    Another question!

How easy is it to open up the Mini and stick more RAM in it?

I'm not going to pay over the odds for Apple to add it for me, i'd rather go to Crucial and upgrade it myself...

Hey there Zhenboy, nice to hear from you again dude!

Got it connected and have loaded Tiger on it. Annoyingly enough it came with Panther to Tiger upgrade however I just downloaded Tiger off the net haha (either way I've paid for it...)

Things I've noticed to be sluggish:

--GFX, Not the greatest with the RSS Screensaver, what to expect with 32MB of on board VRAM.

--HDD Speed - not the greatest either

However I admit I expected these slight slow downs, however for basic use it is brilliant, I really like it.

It is no Power Mac but is good enough for most things - I'm planning on installing this in my car (as a carpooter lol). Will see how that goes

Opening it: It has tabs on the insides like the iPods do - so yea you CAN open it, look online for a few guides.

So it only has 32Mb VRAM for graphics regardless of the RAM you put in it?
I don't think i like that if this is the case.....

But the bottom line is, it's good enough for office/web/mp3 and DVDs?

    Cheers

    Dan

office/web/mp3 and DVDs - sure probably just perfect. Need extra space? External FW hdds to the rescue.

On thing is if you shift ALOT of data the HDD lagginess is going to show up.

if you are going to open it up anyway you might as well get the 1.2 GHz version and flick the switch to overclock it. You can do that right or is it an urban myth?

Mike, when you get around to putting it in your car post your progress would you.

The mac mini is never going to be a gaming machine, nor is it going to be a video editing G5, however it is perfectly fine for music, playing vids, internet, Office, webcam chat, and most other things. It will run tiger perfect, but a 1GB upgrade is highly recommended.

The reason I got myself a mini is I needed a 2nd computer that I could take around with me, I can leave it on 24:7 with no heat problems and most importantly QUIET! I also wanted to try something different to windows, and I have loved my mac experience so far!

Ok, that's exactly the conclusion i came too... I never play games, the last PC game i played was Geoff Crammond's F1 or Prince of Persia (the original!) on a Epson 286 6Mhz..

With regards to RAM, can you use any RAM, or what Ram can you and can't you use? Is it PC2700 stuff?

hehe bsodmike, you must be a salesman's dream

I'm somewhat disappointed that they didn't take the opportunity to stuff a 64MB gfx part in there, as they're not that much different thermally..

I think most people just hit crucial's memory configurator, fairly cheap, reliable and the service is great

How come other PC2700 won't work?

£80 for 1GB stick is quite pricey, how come they dont sell 512 etc? I am guessing there are 2 slots in the mac mini?

I never said it didn't work..

There's one slot in the mac mini, which is fitted with whatever you specced it with (usually 256Mb), it's just that crucial ensure the ram they sell will work with whatever system you specify through the memory configurator..

    Clicky
