    G5 Dilemma - HELP!

Ok guys, this is a toughy. Right now my G5 is in England and I am finishing my degree this year and have to start planning in shifting my stuff back home so here are my options...

I paid £1000 for my 1.8Ghz singe CPU G5, 512 ram and 80GB hdd and added on 2GB RAM and 550GB of HDDs for another £350ish...

    a) Bring the G5 home, if it passes the 32KG limit that heathrow imposes on any single piece of luggage.

-- From the Apple site:Weight: Single-processor configuration, 36 pounds (16.4 kg); < this is without the box, so approx 25kg worst case scenario.

    b) Sell it with no ram and no HDDs

    c) Sell with 1Gig ram and 250GB HDD

-- Option b/c mean that I'll be purchasing a newer G5 here locally (probably a dual 2.3 or dual 2.7 and install the left over stuff if I go for option b & c...

What value would I sell it for option b and c? It is 8 months old, still under AppleCare...

    I'm thinking as follows:

    b- £750
    c- £850

Any input will be greatly appreciated guys

    Thanks, Mike

P.S. I'll be using the pbook for the time being...

Im pretty certain it wouldnt be over 32kg. Although youd probably still be better using a shipping company, baggage handlers can be a little violent with things, and you wont be insured for it i dont think, also they charge a fortune for heavy stuff on planes.

You could try hanging around the Graphics department at uni for the ucas days, you might sell it then.

How much of a premium would you have to pay in sri lanka for a mac? (if any, thinking you might be better buying one here and shipping it back if youre gonna get a new one)

Would they charge you any extra for the carriage going home?

If it's anything silly, I'd sell it on; not too sure on prices, best to check on ebay for similar items and see how well they did

Go to the Apple refurb store on Weds and compare the their price to what you propose. This will give you an idea of what your G5 is worth.

I'm inclined to think that if you are to take the [computer] back with you, do as someone else said and use a shipping company! It's bound to get beaten to a pulp otherwise.

I'd see how much it costs to ship it back via this method first.
If the price of shipping is less than the amount you'd have to spend to get a new G5 back home, (after you've got the money from the sale), keep it. There's nothing wrong with the machine you have in my opinion and with Intel Macs on the horizon next year or so, i think it makes sense. This is just my opinion, however

It should be around 25kg tops and I have 32kg allowance...

A new G5 here would cost around Rs. 300,000+ (which roughly works out to £1500+) or about £1800 for the dual 2.7...

Extra Carriage: Nope, if I take the G5 home i'll be traveling with the G5 and my laptop only!...

Ok. I've decided to do as follows:

PowerMac G5 1.8Ghz (With BTO Bluetooth and ATi 9600XT 128MB DDR Gfx)
    Sell with 2GB RAM
    Sell with 250GB HDD
    -£900.00

    Purchase 300GB DiamondMax (16mb cache) SATA HDD (~ £110)
    Purchase Crucial 2GB Kit 184-pin DIMM DDR PC3200 (~ £190)
    Purchase M-Audio Revolution 7.1 (~ £90.00)

    Balance: £510.00

Purchase G5 Dual 2.7Ghz (at home)
    Sell 512MB RAM
    Sell 250GB HDD.

--This way, I end up with a Dual 2.7Ghz machine, with 2GB RAM (in 1GB dimms) and 600GB o' space

Thanks for all the help guys...

Heh, well crisis sorted. Seems like I'll be snagging that Rev 7.1 for cheaper (~45inc)...

I got one person seriously interested in picking up my G5. If that doesn't go through I'll first list in the trading section and if that doesn't work out I'll list it on fleabay...
