Lots of Mac Questions

Ok I am thinking of suggesting a Mac Mini to my father in law over a new pc. He uses the pc to print word documents and to email,surf and use msn with a webcam. What I need to know is if its possible to use his word doc somehow on a Mac and if we can still chat using MSN or something like it?

AOL on the PC, iChat AV (part of OSX) on the mac.

Something like Trillian would be AdiumX for OS X. Also vids (divx/xvid etc) can be played via VLC. There is MS Office for Mac as well btw.

He can use his webcam with iChat AV (if supported?). Printing would be an issue with OS X if it isn't supported

So its quite possible then to use a mac and chat and use word and office files. Hell I may even buy myself a Mac when we move to Vancouver.

You can do *a lot more* than that LOL. OS X isn't as crippled as many people (here/elsewhere) may make you think.

The only problem with the video messaging is that it only works through ichat. If he uses msn messenger he is stuffed. However a mac will be lovely for basic computer needs. I love my powerbook!

Well its really important that we can use MSN for cheap chat whilst we are in Canada and he really needs to be able to use Word to print his stickers off for work.

If you can cope without videochat then it will be fine. Either that 2 macs and 2 isights!

Btw AdiumX can connect to MSN, AIM, Yahoo etc etc and is much better than the official MSN client imho, but you can try both and see which you prefer. There is also Proteus but you have to pay for it and it's still quite buggy.

And OS X supports Office Mac (v2004 being the latest I think) and it works...well like office should heh!

Apparently AMSN now has webcam support, but I havent had the chance to check it out, or whether you can just 'view' webcam and not send it

Further to my previous post... I looked for the new AMSN, and yes, you can send webcam thro msn to other users...
