    So what now?

    OK...

I've been given an old g4 tower PC - 866MHz 1GB RAM, MacOs Tiger.

I've been playing around with it, and so far I'm very impressed. Not so impressed as to dump my PC, but I'm using it for more things than I'm using my Intel/Microsoft PC for. (At the moment, anyway. The novelty of screens swooshing in and out might wear off after a while )

I'm interested in video editing, and a lot of video editors swear by Apple Macs for that purpose. The only system intensive thing I use my PC for at the moment is video editing (no gaming or anything like that), so I'm keeping my options open. Say for example, in anything from 6 months - 2 years time, I was looking at either upgrading my PC or buying a Mac to use in addition to my aging pentium 4 1.7GHZ... If I was looking at transferring to THE OTHER SIDE, what are your opinions over what I should buy? Should I wait for the Macs to start coming with intel chips? Should I just get a G5 based one now?

The one thing that puts me off about the new imac is the fact that it's so bespoke, the upgrade options are tiny, whereas there's plenty of expansion in the Powermac range, but extortionate prices.

    Help me

before you go investing in any more hardware, I'd recommend trying out the prospective software. I use both FCP (G5 dual 2.5) and Sony Vegas (on a PC). All comes down to what your area of interest. If it's in film transfers, in both directions, then FCP has a better range of choices. If it's video / DV / HDV, then Vegas rules, without doubt - much faster in almost all editing tasks. A lot of people are migrating to Vegas after they've seen it in action. I've just finished working on a series coming out on DVD, using FCP, which is being released worldwide, and one of my problems was not being able to do multicam per track. FCP can do multicam, but only per clip. Anyway, try stuff before you buy, regardless.

Also, FWIW, a lot of people are swearing by the new AMD dual cores, regardless of the software on the PC. That's my next purchase

You might be surprised at how well the older macs such as yours handle video. Give iMovie a shot and see what you can come up with. Its basic but has some options.
