Dunno.
Bye.
Only if you want it as a status/fassion accessory.
Its well documented and treated (amongst pmp fans) that the ipod is one of the worst on the market, but with phonominal product placement and advertising. (90% of ipod fans think apple invented the portable mp3 player it seams).
how much space do you need? the irivier is good, as are sony's offerings.
If you've got visual imperments, check out sony's latest 6gig player (direct competitor to mini). The screen is just awsome, i mistook it for a screen printed label that was on it. OLCD technology, my god its so easy to read. Worth a lot more than colour as its both more impressive and easyer to read. You pay for this cutting edge stuff thou.
What size, what formats do you listen too, do you like flacc? If i said ear phones, do you say bud, or cans. Do you think shure are the only acceptable bud phones? (i got given a pair for my birthday, personally i wouldn't spend £100 on them.... £50 probably, £100 no, way too much. But the quality is very impressive (i like music thats often demanding on speakers)).

When you compaire the ipod, next to an iriver, or a sony (terrible software, but really nice hardware). There is just no reason to choose one. They are a fassion iteam, and i hate fassion without function. (i like my fassion iteams to be "cool" because of how well designed/made they are).
yeh OLCD was an alchol + dislexic created acronym. My point is, on a pmp you want one of those rather than a colour TFT. As it provides better function.
My advice is to goto shops that have them in stock, see which you like the feal of, which you can stick in your pocket without people wanting to mug you. Also save some money for good headphones, ear canal take getting used too, but are well worth it.
if iPod wasnt the best on the market why are they outselling their competitors by millions?
the whole point of apple products is that they look great and have brilliantly simple functionality - the clickwheel is a stroke of genius and the other manufacturers no it.
the 30GB ipod video is not expensive at all - granted the cost of accessories makes your eyes water
oh and go ahead and buy a sony mp3 player or an iRiver but no other mp3 player hold their value like the ipods do
macs just work dude ;)
how old are you?
you worked in any part of product design?
Why did AOL have far more users than any other ISP (even thou their loosing them by millions each year). Were they the best no?
Its about placement. People had the Rio's and the DAP's way before the iPod, but the key thing is, these people wern't cool.
Thats why the ipod sells. I don't think you've ever used these other players, by just calling them mp3 players your showing extream ignorance. Big issues with apple players:
They hold their value?! They drop like flys more like. My best friend's died last week (she didn't buy it, it was a presant). No missuse, battery is fine, firmware just dosen't power. Its only 6 months old but because it was gift there not allowing a return (even thou she has the recipt because its not in her name). That was bought from the apple store in london. I've poked it a bit, and come to the conclusion that it must be firmware, as everywhere seams to be getitng power that should be, it even queries the flash too.
Battery. Sony included instructions on how to remove their batteries from all their pmp's (sorry network walkmens) since the old days. Why? Because they recongnised them to be consumables, and also for recycling purposes (nimiah or newer liion aren't nice!) and use pb free components. Nice.
Apple use cheap batteries and try to charge extortion for the replacement (which isn't user serviceable).
Apple products look great. No, no they don't. I think they look like hoop earings on a chavette, she think's she's in the zone, but i think she's trying to get long wave radio.
A little about me, http://www.0bytes.net/netmd/source.zip was the first program i released when i started hacking around my NetMD (bit before HDD based players were anything but £500+!) I also like the electronics of them too, when i was 16 i made my own flash based player using a high end atmel mcu. In short, i'm obviously far smarter than you are, because anyone who says "macs just work dude" when they had the highest failure rate per % of any consumer goods in the UK (i think it was a Which?) stat, is clearly either stupid, or just a fan boy.
Also i'm venting some agression that a phone call has given me on you, but i don't really mind, because apple fans i see the same way cartmen see's cripppled kids.
if you removed your head from your own arse you might be able to recognise the beauty and simplicity of the iPod
it's that sort of comment that makes people just ignore everything else you say to be honest.
I think ipods are really nice machines. I can't help but think they are overpriced but there is no denying that they are nice easy to use machines if not a little shy on the battery length. Iriver are also worth considering. I'd go with one of the above, definitely in black.
I have a 1.5 gig sony mp3 player (got it for a real bargain price); great hardware. I'd never buy another one because of the software.
Edit: animus is correct i did indeed mean software and just to stress that sonic stage is an abomination. It incredibly restrictive and slow.
loki i'm assuming you mean the software, not the hardware.
Sony's software is an abomination, its the same mentalitiy at play (sony records making more than sony electroincs, so lets cripple the electronics) that is been used with DRM (by many, not just sony who have gotten a lot of (justly deserved) flack lately).
Useablilty, clickwheel is a good idea, and they hold the pattent on them been used in personal music devices (i don't agree with this as apple didn't invent it, but i hate all patents i don't hold :P) However, its not really innovative.
Innovation on music browsing would be multidimensional searching. Now this hasn't been implemented (understandably) but at the end of the day, sony's latest 6gb mini pmp offering has much better device usablility. (due mainly to the screen. See one in person, i want to buy one just so i can admire it, i have no use for a 6gig player thou). My mum can use one, my gran can use one. Thats the test.
Software. All software is flawed, making something open source dosen't make it better. iRiver do seam thou be in the best posistion at present.
But for me the biggest importance is batterylife. I live a random life, thats how i like it, I'm 20 now, i've got plenty of time for mononity. I like been back in my home town's train station for only 15minuites before catching another train to go see mr scruff perform with some mates i've not seen for 8 weeks, but getting a 7am train so i'm back for 9am monday morning. I know this sounds cheesy, but thats my life, my player has to fit in with that. As such i've a sony because of its size, weight, and battery life. Software dosen't really bother me for reasons i shant enter into here. But there's no way i'd recomened my dad say getting a sony until sonic stage becomes decent.
"beauty and simplicity of the iPod", well i've not fung shai'd my room (or however u spell it) my technology's looks should be defined by function. (what is beauty after all?) Simplicity. I've got this pen for sale, i'm going to charge you £200 for it, because its simple. Theres a time and a place for a KISS mentalility, pmp's isn't it (because ipod is over complicated like the rest, DRM for instance).
and its people like you that make these forums what they are...Quote:

I am an iPod owner. No, I do not wear cool sunglasses and use french hair conditioner. I got the 4g iPod last X-Mas, and it's the only Apple product I own (along with a G5 case hehe). I bought it because I'm a MASSIVE music addict, and yes, it has its own fashion accessory aspect. Either way, what is wrong with a fashion accessory? People like to be different from others, so let them be - they can get another iPod clone on the market... theres nothing wrong with that. However, just because the iPod is popular and a stylish device, made by a company that is often hated uselessly for no reason by PC users, it's a target for those who are sometimes jealous that they do not own one. No, I am honest, one mate kept slagging it off over and over until he got one to shut his mouth, then he loved the thing. And reviewers aren't wrong when multiple publications document the ipod as being a wonderful top marks device. You get really good support (if your headphones, or any Apple-branded products with the initial 1 Year warranty fail, I can take it to the Apple shop and get it swapped there and then). The simplistic way it works is phenomenal, and you can pick it up in a minute. Itunes, at first I hated - I only had it installed for the iPod - but that's because I didn't give it a chance. Now it's my only music player, and it syncs and automatically keeps my subscribed podcasts up to date.
I don't need to educate nvening or anyone else on the features it offers, since its advantages have been clearly described by others anyway :)
Why would he do that? It makes little sense if you hate something to get one?Quote:

Have you owned an iRiver unreal? A DAP jukebox? A HD3/HD5? if you haven't then how can you debate? Its just i've used this, i found it great.
If you don't have a range for comparision then you value has no merrit outside for fit for purpose. Lets be honest pretty much every player on the market is fit for purpose.
So my advice still remains, don't think the iPod is the best because its the market leader (it truely isn't, in my opion, i've taken all them appart except a nano and any iriver). Go preferably somewhere you can touch n feal them all. Find the one which is the best for you. Not some zealotist fan boy.
Why do you assume I judged it upon the use of an ipod and only an iPod? I've tried a Sony one (the one with the set of squares for the menu), two different Philips ones, Zen, the Zen Micro, the H10, some iRiver with a carbon fibre aethetics, some chunky Archos one and even this Creative Portable media thing. Since, I don't own any of those, i obviously can't supply the depth of the context I could with my ipod, but I have tried them. Directly from people who own them too.Quote:

I know very well the iPod is not the perfect product. But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be ideal for someone who listens to music (and perhaps with a fairly large budget too lol)
tbh you ipod haters are the biggest stereotype. you stereotype us with an ipod as being people who take "ipod" to mean "mp3 player" when really you all seem to just be joining an as of yet unamed cult that doesn't like ipod's out of principle, or becuase you don't own one.
how about you grow up, stop insulting people you do not know, simply because they have an mp3 player you have been forced to hate through the same stereotype you are basing your argument on.
when i wake up in the morning, I expect one of those answers where you quote every one of my sentences, and find a counter argument against it. I have personally never been privelaged enough to get one of those before.
Good night :)
