I have given a friend of mine some videos to play on her powerbook while she is away traveling. They are AVI's of some sort, but she cant play them on her powerbook with iTunes. She has updated to the lastest version of quicktime and updated it but they still wont play. Are there any other players (free) that are worth trying? Whats the best thing to do for her? I know nothing about macs.

download the codec from divx.com for the mac
and try VLC - its great and free and works well - also allows full screen playback which quicktime (non pro) doesn't
u need codecs.... divx might be the one u need
VLC is what you need :) Best video program out there for the mac imho.
Quicktime is ok...but I dont want to have to fork out for pro to get fullscreen :(
Cool, i will try VLC. Quicktime did update itself but then all it played was a blank screen with no sound (timing bar moved and displayed the correct lengh etc). Thing is, it might be divx i dont know and dont want to have to start messing around downloading loads of codacs and confusing her. I take it VLC will play divx as it is?
you still need to install the codec for it to work ;/ but it is relativly painless to do
Furthermore, are there any apps on the MAC for identifying what codac a file was created with?
the unix "file" command from a terminal ought to do it, though that's a bit complex for some users.
anyway, don't bother with quicktime for .avi - it barely supports it at all. VLC has all codecs it could want compiled straight in - no extra downloads needed, just the 10ish meg vlc download.

To tell the truth, i'm liking mac's more and more. It's basically a highly modified form of Linux is it not? If thats the case, can linux programs be ported over?

Almost, it's based on BSD, linux apps can be ported but they'll need to be tinkered with a fair bit to make the most of it :)Quote:
