Dodgy iPod reliability?

I finally received my 40GB iPod about 4 weeks ago, and it had a duff hard drive. I could write songs to it fine, but as soon as I tried to read a song off it the unit would crash. Anyway, Apple agreed to take it back and refund me.

It's now been almost 4 weeks and it's still not been picked up; I phoned the Apple store and they have a "backlog on returns". I've never read any reports of people having trouble with these units before - is there something amiss with the new 10/20/40gb ones?

When I was in California I was waiting at the Genius Bar (their tech support desk) in the one of the San Fransisco Apple Stores and about 5 people came in with duff iPods in about half an hour. They certainly don't strike me as terribly reliable, mine (an iPod #2) has been far from it.

I got a Gen 2, the only problem with mine is if you chose a song then put the lock on quickly, it skips the song and plays the next 1 on the album. My friends new one has had broken headphones and once lost all its data.

I had a Gen2 for a couple of months (sold because I wasnt using it tbh) and had zero probs with it...
