yeh but at least the duo has a step in the right direction, whilst mac-osx is a pile of poo, those boxes aren't too shabby for the size, i wounder how silent they are!

Yeah I have no beef with the OS at all, at least since 10.3. The less we say about pre-10.3 the better.

It's the crazy decisions Apple make about everything that isn't the OS which has me baffled. It would be easy and cheaper to just whack desktop HDD and RAM into the mini and increase the size a bit. When you can get a 250GB drive in a £500 HP piece of crap, first-time buyers just aren't going to consider the mini. So what if you make it a tiny bit larger in the process, it's not like people couldn't deal with large boxes to start with.

Sorry to disapoint, but I've been forced too before now, its just wrong, a barstardised BSD with security flaws which apple seam to be behaving like MS did 5 years ago over. (thou not quite as bad as OpenBSD).

As for HDD + RAM, this box is ment to be small, and hopefully silentish. You have your storage on another computer, not this one. Also the price of 1gig is now low enough, you remeber your paying a premium for the size, so why not include RAM.

Its not as if say shuttles are as cheap as full size versions (a lot of people would say, why are the mainboards so expensive, smaller tends to be cheaper, assuming they don't need extra ground planes and the like).

However I'd still never buy a mac, any architecture which isn't open, isn't for me!
(funny how so many mac fans moan on endlessly (and un-informedly) about TCPA)

glad i got my mini when i did!

i managed to get one of the 1.5ghz models

osx is awesome, all i am wondering is how loud the new mac minis are going to be, and what the performance is going to be like with the alterations, including the graphics...

    ian

also the price has gone up quite substantial as to neglect the fact that i thought this was a budget small system for those that wanted to use their existing keyboard screen etc. but now it would take the price above that of a g5/(new intel imac) if you want to buy seperate new decent stuff...

anyone else very disappointed with the 'most affordable mac ever'

massive price hike for a few trimmings.... 4 usb ports, gigabet ethernet, 11g wireless and bluetooth 2

then whack a ton on the price

i think the imac is a much more affordable option now

I think the worst thing about these new ones (other than the intel gfx, slow HDD and notebook ram) has to be the price, how is anyone supposed to be tempted into "switching" if the mac mini is double the price of any number of Dell boxes? (which usually come with a screen, keyboard and mouse, even if they are a bit crap)

Shooting thyself in the foot it would seem..

    I love my mac mini

And i feel good with myself for getting it whilst it was wholey mac

And as i have got front row installed on this g4 this new one doesn't bother me

Shame about the apple remote tho but i have a wireless keyboard to make up for that. OSX is a treat to use; i got my mini for £280 incl bluetooth wireless set and 1.5ghz spec mac mini etc from ebay; it did originally come with a isight, but i flogged that hence the price

Seriously if you want a mac (and not an intel) now is the time; just wait for the annoncement in the UK and hopefully the prices will go down a bit for you

    Ian

Good thing with the new one is the fact that it has an input for audio/optical, i had to buy an iMic for mine, but that is hardly anything! I want to see some real world benchies from reputable online review websites!

Oh my god, TheAnimus slating macs, I may have a heart attack because of the surprise! The stereo looks awful and there were already good products out there. It will be good to see how much faster the new minis are than the old powerpc ones. Shame they haven't gone more htpc really. Will also be interesting to see how it compares to the new evesham effort.
    Not around too often!
