    Apple "Showtime!" Event News

Not too much to say at the moment other than both the iTunes Music Store and Apple Store sites are "down" undergoing maintanance, and just under an hour to go until the fun and games start...

Until then, a couple of links:

    MacRumors live transcript
    Apple Special Event Live Feed

I'll post a few things in here to save macrumours bandwidth

full widescreen ipod with virtual touchwheel, new ipod nano, Showtime Movie Store, and a dongle thingy to stream downloaded movies from your mac to your TV apparently..

There's also rumours of macbook pro updates, iphone (which I doubt will launch in '06, more likely '07..) and a couple of other odds and ends..

I'll be interested in the new nano as my mum wants one, and even if it's not one of the new ones, it should drop the price of the old ones nicely

Theatre is near capacity, with all the top iPod accessory makers in attendence..

Updated iPod: iPod is getting enhanced today. 60% brighter with brighness control, 3.5 hours video playback (up from 2 hrs... big version goes to 6.5 hours), new headphones, gapless playback

New iPod software features: instant searching, new games (Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini golf, pac man, tetris, texas holdem, vortex, and zuma)

games will work on 5G ipods

games for sale on iTunes for $4.99

    $249 and $349 with 60GB and 80GB capacity

iPod nano is now, as rumored, Aluminum and in colours - Green, silver, black, blue, & pink, battery life increased to 24 hours

new nano software just like standard iPod, available in 3 sizes, with capacities doubled:

2GB nano in silver only for $149
4GB nano in any colour for $199
8GB nano in black for $249

All models are 52% smaller in volume than previous nano. new charger, new armband, new lanyard

iPod Shuffle is now 2nd generation size of iPod Radio Remote, metal body, 1 model (1GB), $79, ships in october.

    iTunes 7 available today

Source list now includes library with sep libraries for all forms of media

Store now has own section, devices have their own sections, playlists too

iTunes will give you cover art for free if you are missing cover art (thanks Steve)

3 different views of iTunes, list view, album view (with art and tracks), then "cover flow view" lets you rapidly find what you want by album cover

iPod updater appears to be now integrated into iTunes

TV shows are now encoded at 640x480 (h264), up from 320x240

Today we're introducing the biggest single enhancement: iTunes 7
You say "it looks the same," but it isn't
[the left nav is more cleanly organized without being radically different]
We've added a View switch, a 3-position switch. we've added a 2nd view called album view, so you can scroll through your music library and look at it by album. what if you ripped your CDs and don't have the covers? Today we're announcing free missing album cover art for all the music in your library if you have an itune acct. itunes will automatically download it for free
but there's something even better. that's the third view. it's called Cover Flow view. [LOOKS LIKE FLIPPLING THROUGH YOUR CD RACK]

you can now sync between multiple computers using an iPod, as long as both are authorized on the same account

Now, all of this video is encoded with the best encoding in the world, H.264. We've been distributing it at 320x240. Today, we're going to take that up a notch to 640x480. That's 4x the resolution. iTunes 7 also has seamless playback for video

it appears as though the nano's packaging is 52% smaller, not the nano itself.

    Continuum:

Video on screen now markedly higher resolution

    "one more thing..."

    Movies!

Tv shows - started with 1 network, 5 shows.

Today, films from Walt Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, Miramax. (all Disney owned)

75 films online today, more every week and month

New releases $12.99 preorders and first week, after that up to $14.99

    most titles will be $9.99

Near DVD quality. Same encoding as TV shows at 640x480. If you have a 5mb/s broadband connection, it will take approximately 30 minutes to download a movie

    Dolby surround audio in videos

U.S. now, International in 2007. (arrrgh!)

iPod boxes now show Pirates of the Carribbean

iTunes 7 is available today as a free download from apple.com

    So: Movies
    near DVD image quality
    Dolby surround audio
    Same day as DVD
    Pre-order with one click
Usage rights = same as TV shows
Parental controls extended to include MPAA ratings
    International in 2007

MacCentral: we HOPE to take this international in 2007. (see the difference?) - legal issues ahoy! ?

Bob Iger of Disney takes stage, and recaps what Jobs has already said

Iger called Disney and Apple's first partnership to bring TV shows to the iTunes Store last year "a breakthrough," and added that "the marriage of great content and great technology -- and of great user interface -- is truly a killer application."

Steve is wrapping up. Thanks to engineering and other departments.

One last thing, an unusual sneak peek..

    Q1 2007 "Completes the story"

You can take content to computer or iPod, but now... TV

Apple is releasing its long-rumored set-top box in Q1 2007. It will be Wireless

Like a Mac Mini... iTV is its name (not final). (anyone spot the problem in the UK market??)

1/2 size of Mac Mini, built-in power supply, USB, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus old RCA stereo audio ports. Works with Apple Remote

Interface is like next gen front row

Engadget: It looks like this {a flatter Mini} it's called iTV. That's a codeword. we need to come up with a better name. (aha! someone obviously pointed out that it's the name of some of the tv channels over here in blighty..)

Video access is instantaneous, looks like watching a DVD

Video looks very close to DVD quality even on a huge theater sized projector

MacCentral: The software features 3D animated graphics with a menu on the right and graphics on the left. Jobs demonstrated it, going into the Movies menu and scrolling through floating artwork on the left-hand side.

iTV lets you get access to trailers and itunes store selected content from internet

Engadget: [Steve finds and plays The Incredibles. it's not 640x480, it's HDTV]

works with iTunes on PC or Mac. price will be $299

Steve says: Apple is now in your den, living room, car, pocket

    One More Thing (again)

It all comes down to the artists

John Legend has a new album next month (Legend slides on stage via moving platform)

MacCentral: Jobs closed the event with a live performance by Grammy-winning musician John Legend.

Engadget: So we'll see you all soon. Oh, we do have one more thing!
All this technology is amazing, but it all comes down to artists because otherwise we don't have anything to listen to or watch.
We like to remind ourselves of that. So today we have a great artist here to perform for us. his name is John Legend. He was nominated for 8 Grammy awards and won 3.
He's got a new album coming out next month called Once Again, so I would like it if you would please joing me in welcoming John Legend
[Legend appears at a full-size piano to sing an acoustic version of Save "Room"]

    That's all folks?

Yup, that's it.. Off to the Apple Store with ye!

I've had a look through the Apple site, but can't find the answer to my question, was wondering if you could help out maybe stoo?

Whats the difference between the previous ipod video 30gb model and this new 30gb model, apart from the longer battery life and brighter screens?

The new iPods also have gapless playback, games support, brightness settings and a letter search scrolling feature. However there is an update out on iTunes (iPod updater 1.2) that adds these additional features (apart from the battery and brighter screens ofcourse) to existing 5G iPod's.

I've done this myself and a lot of compilations I have sound far more better with the gapless playback (i.e seamless and smooth).
