why do you care?
because it means you can use free open-source fuse filesystems like ntfs-3g (writeable ntfs), encfs (encrypted directories), sshfs (secure remote file storage on *nix systems), gmailfs (gmail-based storage) and so on. woo!
I have been following this with interest - has anyone slapped a GUI on it yet for us lesser mortals?
