    Rover 216 Coupe

Somebody near me is selling one of these, looks pretty good. 1.6 engine, 61k miles. Few bad things like a bit of rust, scratches, and tax runs out in 8 days. But it has 11 months MOT. £950 ONO. Anybody have experience with these? I know it has a Honda engine. But also headgaskets are known to go with rovers. Gona check it out later, but seems in pretty good nick. Any areas I should look out for?

    Lots of info here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_220_coupe

Says in 96 they changed the Honda 1.6 for a Rover K series engine.

You can do a free DVLA check here:
    http://www.rac.co.uk/web/vehiclechecks/dvla_lookup/

could be worth checking for this: "Rear spoiler's paintwork flakes off and water leaks in the boot."

£550 is quite near £950 as an offer isn't it? Especially if it's got a bit of tin worm (there's ALWAYS more behind it).

I seriously doubt the guy would take under £850 for it.. so £550 would be out of the question probably.

    On the RAC site..:

    Manufacturer ROVER
    Model 216 COUPE
    Body type COUPE
    Colour RED
    Fuel type PETROL
    Date manufactured 31 December 1995
    Number of previous owners 8

8 previous owners? That's quite a lot... although it is an oldish car... isn't that a bit high though?

    drive it and see why

Seriously though.....people buy Coupe's of all sorts, and then cant manage with them, and flog them.

I've seen two Porsche 911's this month, uinder 2 year sold, both with 3 or more owners. Thats in under 24 months.

216 Coupe is actually really nice to drive..BUT....I prefered the lower power 1.6 in the 216 hatchback (GSi model) not the GTi model.

Either way, I gotta say......over 700 is a lot of money for that car

Sorry....stuff is alwaysa worth what someone will pay, but I'd not give over 700 for it unless it was one owner, whom I met, with a service history so mammoth that I could trace it back to Jesus and Moses getting a lift in it with photo eviodence.

They have great engines, but I can't remember if it's a single cam or twin cam D16 in that one.

Either way, they go on forever if you look after them

A lot of the suspension, steering, gearbox and engine ancillaries are interchangable with a few other Rovers and Hondas too.

Twin cam....its the GSi that was single, hence the better torque that always suits me

Zak, the GSi was a SOHC and the GTi had the DOHC. Both Honda D16 engines. I'm running the 4.4 final drive from a GSi in my CRX gearbox at the moment

The SOHC D16 is a very torque engine compared to the DOHC, which is probably why you liked it!

and I'm glad you're here, cos you faaaaaaar exceed my Honda knowledge

    that is EXACTLY right

And I hated the Turbo....and I slightly less hated the 2.0.

Dealer I worked for back then (Vauxhall) owned a Rover franchise too......got all excited, went for a drive in Coupe Turbo...lost excitment.....drove 216 Gsi for a weekend as a loan car, fell in love.
    /blush

    Sad i know.

220 turbo was so 'skittish' it was unnerving as i remember... i agree Zak - 700 notes seems like about 300 too much to me

a lot of you are saying you wouldn't pay much for it.. but why? If you look around at other prices, you see people paying a grand for cars with 80k milage, nevermind 60k..
