Worrying Rover Problem

Hi Guys,

Can anyone think of what might be causing a problem we are currently experiencing with my boyfriends Rover 616 diesel please...

The problem we are having is that it keeps running as though it isn't firing all cylinders but there is no pattern to when it happens. As a result it means that the car looses power and on occasions are having to drop gears only to get less than 50mph out of it until it decides to behave.
It's turning into a big problem as it has happened a couple of times now on the motorway and last night it seemed that the car couldn't actually go any faster than 50 (jokes aside people, we know this isn't a fast car).

I've suggested that we should replace the leads and plugs since I think they are quite old and probably breaking down a bit, but my concern is that this won't actually improve anything and that there is a more serious probelm afoot.

Any ideas??

It could be any number of things, losing compression, dirty fuel filter etc Might be best to have it checked out somewhere if neither of you are mechanically savvy

I thought diesel's had glow plugs?

They do but faulty glow plugs should only affect the starting of the engine from cold

sounds like your car is running in limp mode or get me home mode sounds like a turbo related problem either egr valve
or and maf sensor fault
with diagnostics they will be able to tell you,
i take it nots not smoking big time?

So far as I know it's just a straight diesel, not a TD but what you said sounds highly likely.
The boy is even less mechanically minded than me and someone told him it's the clutch but I don't see it somehow.
It's booked into the garage on Friday now so fingers crossed they can fix it and it's nothing too expensive!

As said if it's diesel then the starting will be problematic if the glow plugs are shot.

If it's having problems when running I'd be taking a look at the fuel pump and possibly the filter.

there isnt a 616 as far as i can tell :/

Well it's a 600, just assumed it was a 616 tbh but since I don't drive it or own it I'm obviously mistaken!

Someone else has suggested to me that it may be the fuel filter.
Someone has told the boy that they think it's the clutch but I think they are talking out of their bottom, 11 years behind the wheel and having been through 2 clutches in previous cars means even I know that the clutch won't affect the way the engine runs in the way we are experiencing.
Should find out on Friday from the garage, so fingers crossed it's something easy!

Yeah I know but we don't know if he solves his problem so I recommending that his fuel filter needs some replacement. He can do it on his own actually, there are a lot of blogs that will help him on how to replace a fuel filter. Good luck.

you would assume after 3 years it would be solved, or the car scrapped..
