Simple as that really.....lets take ONLY MOTORWAYS.
Don't be an arse and say 200 mph....UNLESS you can justify it. Think of the TRAFFIC VOLUME and WEATHER.....
and vote on only one....then we'll scrap about it![]()
60mph
70mph as it is now
80mph
85mph
90mph
No Limit
Variable (as per M25) Max 70mph

I say no limit like in germany
If people want to fly down the motorway at 150 Mph while its empty then thats fine, but the reason it works in Germany is the drivers are probably better behaved and less boy racer type folks

I said 80 MPH because it is a little higher than current value so would allow people to go that extra bit faster without worrying about police...but also maybe help stop people speeding as much because the maximum speed is that bit higher, they would be happy to move along at 80 happy in the knowledge they are within the law rather than go that extra speed and break the law
Me thinks i am living in a dream world!
It's fine as it is - people don't need to go any faster than they are already. Those that do are idiots, imo.
wrong forum.....debating is elsewhere you ickle wind up merchantOriginally Posted by Theo

I sound a bit harsh there, though.. not all people who want to drive faster are idiots - quite a few are, though! Like the guy with the expensive penis extension that drives along in the middle lane (left lane is completely empty) at 65MPH, so you overtake on the right to avoid overtaking on the left (and breaking the law). As soon as you get back in the left hand lane, what do you see? Only that very same expensive penis extension in the right hand lane (empty middle lane, this time!), accellerating to >90MPH because his pride has been hurt by your less expensive than his, motor.
There are other categories of people that need shooting in the bum, but I shan't go into it.. I'm not really a morning person, tbh!
don't most traffic jams occur because of the 'bunching up' of traffic? e.g. conditions slightly worse ahead (say a seriously nasty junction) so those people slow down, while those behind continue at full speed, when the two reach each other, those behind reach for the brakes, bunching the traffic up. if the volume is large enough, it can lead to a standstill.
i may be wrong on that, just thinking out loud.
i would say variable speed limits, but after seeing the mess that is the m25 near heathrow, no thanks...
i voted 80 because that seems to be the limit that most users i see use, not that changing it will do anything. police are slowly closing down their little lay-by's on the sides of motorways - so soon it could all be lawless...
One of the biggest dangers I see on motorways is idiots who drive TOO SLOW, the most dangerous of which is the idiot on a slip road joining a full-tilt motorway at 40-50 mph, a good 20-30mph speed difference with the traffic he is joining.
Lunacy.
There is a section of M40 near the M25 junction which has 4 lanes. The number of idiots driving along at 70mph in lane 3, with no traffic in lane 1 or 2 is amazing, and all the faster traffic has to bunch up to use lane 4. I don't think there should be a speed limit, but I think drivers should take more responsibility for driving safely. 70mph is a reasonable speed for wet weather, for example.
I think it should be variable depending on the weather conditions with a max of 90mph
Most people including myself hover between 90 and 100 in the outside lane anyway, I don't think we have much regard for the 70 mph 'limit'. As people have mentioned, what doesnt help is muppets in the middle lane forcing people to go around them and slow the outside lane down, when the inside lane is empty! I have no shame in going around people on the inside to make a point.
Thing is though, if the limit was increased from 70 to 80, then the speed at which people automatically get a ban should increase from 100 to 110. But I doubt that would happen. It would be good if it did though because then we could all legally cruise comfortably at a ton and not worry about being stopped.

I say the limit should be variable depending on road surface and weather, lane discipline needs to be enforced tho, people that sit in the outside lane at 70 when the other lanes are empty really piss me off, if theres someone coming up behind you you move over, u dont sit in the outside lane with your "well the limit is 70 so I'm doing 70 attitude", just get out of the frikken way.... If the roads empty theres no need to be in any lane other than the inside one....
The 70 limit was brought in how many years ago..
Cars have come a long way since then, maybe not a good thing as u can be doing well over the current limit and not know it...
all good ideas...ya see you lot understand
Its why we exist here in this forum..you all KNOW what what each other mean...even Theo at 12;30 am with a few beers in him
Hey....it seems that we would mainly be happy with a 5 to 10 moh increase....I would.
85 would be fine on an empty motorway with good consitions....say midnight to 5 am.
Bunching up DOES occur like you say keo¬t....you are exactly right mate
But as you also point out the varied speed limit fails in most cases.
My idea would be......30 in towns......20 either side of a crossing for 200 metres....
60 on A roads
70 on dual carriageways
85 on Motorways....
Points and leniency up to 99
Book firmly thrown at 100 unless mitigating circumstances....(like its YOU and a Police car and no other bugger for miles....) and in most cases old bill are sensible on that one.
85 mph is a good speed and its within most peoples brains.
And ironicaly if it DID get raised...I wouldn't go over it....unlike me doing 80 in a 70 now....I would NOT push the 85 to 95.......
wierd huh?

IMO there should be 2 driving tests, one for normal A/B road driving and then another one for M roads, at 70Mph you need much faster reactions and have to take much more notice of whats going on around and infront of you..
1 years driving experiance, then another test for motorway driving.....
How many people do you know that once they pass there test they wanna go for a blast down the nearest strech of motorway to see how fast the car goes....?
