Fast lane? What fast lane?
I feel like i'm going on a TIRADE here, but is the deal with people religousley staying in the middle/fast lanes of the motorway no matter what.
maybe i've noticed it more because it's getting to me, but the amount of people who stay in these lanes when they are not overtaking anyone is mind-boggling.
I stsay in glasgow and use the M74 alot. I get on at the start of the motorway, which is usually pretty quiet, but i'm amazed at people who get on this motorway, with no cars to be seen in front of them for miles, and continue in the middle lane right from the start, not overtaking anyone!
is it uncool to be in the slow lane? are they scared to be on the motorway and feel sticking to one lane is safer?
I hate undertaking, it's dangerous, it really is, but I will soon have no option because the slow lane will be the only lane with no cars in it.

Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
Remember, when undertaking, there are some poor sods like me that actually obey the rules of the road and use the lanes as they should. Do not expect to come up the slow lane at nearly 100mph and then get angry with me when I pull into the slow lane having overtaken someone who then went off at a junction. That makes you a git.
That was just in case the wotsit who did that to me on Friday afternoon on the A3 read this. Or can even read.
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
Yeah I think the OP wasn't advocating actually undertaking - he knows how dangerous it is. I nearly had a bad accident when I had pulled out of the left hand lane in advance of overtaking a slow car - some twonk decided to undertake me, but he himself was being followed at 5 cm by an even higher class of twonk. Both jumped into my lane to clear the slow car I was over taking - I had to brake and swerve into the right hand lane (thankfully there was a space) to avoid being clattered.
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
I know he waasn't, I just had to rant about the idiot on friday! ;)
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
Can I just say, there's no such thing as a 'fast lane' or a 'slow lane'. You've got lanes 1, 2 and 3. Lanes 2 and 3 are overtaking lanes.

Yeah, I agree, that is why I don't do it! What i'm talking about are the pepole who linger in these lanes who are not overtaking anyone.
I consider these people to be dangerous as much as anyone else.
But you are right, undertaking is wrong and thoughtless, and there are alot of people who do it that seem to have "I own the road" attitude, which is not for me! I enjoy driving, and believe you can have fun doing it without breaking the speed limit and endangering other peoples lives, by driving fast and recklessley.

Beat me to it. I have often spent most of my time on my stretch of the M3 just going along in the left lane passing by all the hogger cretins in the middle/outer lanes. To quote the Highway Code "f the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left" ;)

Exactly right and something I do on a daily basis. But not at nearly a ton on the A3!
Ah, the joys of driving like a middle aged man (and I'm not even 30 yet!).

There's no shame in wafting along at 65 on the left, I do it many mornings, it's relaxing.
People behind me probably get confused when I move over and cruise in the left lane when it becomes free after being in the middle of a stream of cars (still) in the middle lane ;)
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
That is difficult for me to do in my flat cap and mesh backed driving gloves.
:p
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
Driving a big old rover saloon people expect me to be in the 'slow lane'.... which I tend to do simply because its the safest place to be on a motorway full of nutjobs in the other 2 lanes....
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
I think those traffic patrol vehicles (and traffic police) should pull people over for lane hogging and fine them for it. The money claimed can be put into adding an additional lane to the road :)

Which would probably make them more money from another lane of lane hoggers, it would be an investment, haha:rolleyes:
Re: Fast lane? What fast lane?
Whats more dangerous? (both things that shouldnt be done....)
undertaking some idiot in the middle lane OR
Being overtaken at 70mph, by a lorry that is also being overtaken by a van on the fast lane. No thanks.. /puts foot down...
Anyway its my opinion that if you are not using your mirrors (dont tell me you never replaced the outer ones it after some chav broke it off?!?!?) , when you pull over to the slow lane (after overtaking) then it is YOU that is being dangerous.
I wouldnt undertake anyone that is making resonable progress - becuase this is dangerous. But idling in the middle/outer lanes on a motorway.. or doing 40 on a stretch of NSL dual carrageway..
..just becuase you want to go right at the next roundabout, where you dont realise you can go right from either lane, becuase right is actually straight on for this one!!...
you will get undertaken. ITS MORE DANGEROUS TO SIT BEHIND THEM! I think..
Common sense I think..
