    Main Steal*cough*Dealers

Just a little rant here, bear with me.

Crusing along the Motorway the other day with me and the girlfriend in the 110, doing about 60 I pulled out to overtake a lorry to be met with no power, not usual and I knew I'd felt it before. Once coming back from down south it did it and turned out to be an injector pipe blew. I pulled back in and tried to keep it up with the flow but sure enough it was that.

Bodged it together enough to get me home and then started looking around for prices for new parts. Seeing as this was the 2nd pipe to go I'm replacing all four. Local LR Specialist quoted me "around £10" for the pipes and so I took that as good money, with overnight postage was looking at around £40 with VAT.

Tried local LR Dealer just on the off chance. At first they couldn't find any parts because of the age of my vehicle then when they did they quoted me £21.39+VAT each. Hang on, that's over double the price from my local guy. Told LR Parts guy to call me an ambulance ("your an ambulance") then hung up. Ordered of the specialist.

Came today. £7.50 each and they've not charged me for the overnight delivery. Total cost £30.05 where as Dealer would have been well over £60.00.

How can dealers get away with such extreme prices? The parts are Offical Land Rover and even carry the green oval on them.

it's just like going to PC World or any other high street place for components and memory cards etc. You are always going to get a better deal mail order or from a specialist.

Ever watch The Garage on Discovery? They were replacing the oil suspension on an old Merc. The official Mercedes parts were actually from Citron with Citron logos

    Re: Main Steal*cough*Dealers

They get away with it because there are still a lot of people who (VERY wrongly) think that Main Dealer = Best. I only ever took my car into the main dealer once when I got it and received poor customer service and the work done to my car was amateur at best. I was told I needed a whole new headlight cluster costing £155 (+ 1 hours labour for fitting @£95/hour), but in fact I just had to push one clip back in that had popped out. Needless to say I didn't get any of the suggested work done, never went back and lodged a complaint with VW who refunded a portion of the service costs.

I know you're talking about purely parts prices, but there's no reason to go near a main dealer for anything once your warranty has run out. One of my friends just doesn't learn and repeatedly asks to be punished by the main stealer. They've scratched his car (and denied it), made him wait 3 weeks for an appointment while his car was off the road and still he goes back there, even for tyres that cost him twice what it would if he listened to me and went to the decent tyre garage around the corner from my house.

So to answer your question how do they get away with it? Because there are a lot of people who obviously have too much money weighing down their pockets and they feel the need to donate it to the main stealers.

tbh I am looking at a job in a Dealers parts depot but still I think the prices are crazy, every time I go just for the hell of it and drool over the stock and end up having a bloody coronary at the price.

    Re: Main Steal*cough*Dealers

And a dealership will have much higher overheads compared to local garages.

I had to get a ball joint for the steering on my Ninety - about a 50mm taper with a ball on one end, with an o ring and a circlip. Cost from Stealership? £45... cost from generic parts website? £8.50 & free postage. It's a piece of metal ferchrissakes... probably took 5 minutes or less to knock out on a lathe....

Zakkly. With main dealers needing to jump through a million and one hoops to "be" a dealer, and having
vast shwrooms, and massive overheads, the small part companies have been taking a good share fora long time.

IF the dealer decided to increase their discount to the public and IF they sold enough it would work.....they'd get a good violume bonus at the end of a quarter. But it's a risk they needn't take,....yet.

    Re: Main Steal*cough*Dealers

Then again my friendly garage said "you'd need a part off the dealers anyway and we got no idea how long it'd take us to replace it". Local Honda people said it'll be an hour and their rates don't seem to be too much more than the friendly garage. Ok, the bit of power steering pipe is costing 70+vat, but its a long darn thing with far too many bends in it.
