Lesson number 836: In this weather, leave you car safely at home away from the dangers of other drivers and away from the risk of expensive repair bills...

Good point though.
excellent stuff there Zak...
Me dad was driving home yesterday and was going up this big hill. He didn't have much trouble, but there was a poor girl in a corsa who had no clue what to do. She had it in first, with foot flat on the floor, with the wheels just spinning away and going nowhere- Could have done with ya advice. Winter mode really seems to make a difference tho in cars, tho im not sure what it really does.
Yeah top guide
I didn't have the guts to drive this at 6:30am morning though, I nearly did but then I noticed that you couldn't tell where the road started and the pavements ended so I blagged a lift off someone else
Mini!!!!!
its snow.. if you wanna turn round on a hill after a failed attempt..
stick it in reverse, get a decent speed (15mph) up and drop the clutch, keep the revs high, shift into first and flick the steering wheel full lock right (so you turn into the middle of a road), when you get to about 1/2 way round pull the clutch up and flick the wheel full lock the other way.. heypresto all grip is lost and the car swings round to pointing downhill, and you can continue on your way.. and you have your first j-turn
i take no responsibility for the big dent when you f**k this procedure up
im in brighton at the moment, no snow at all, so im fine going back to berkshire on sun thou, then up to cardiff, could be fun if not everything has melted - me parents live at the top of a steep (1/8) hill
incidentally, did you know that grit on a wet road reduces grip by up to 50% compared to just a normal wet road? its gonna be slippy for a while

oh, and its dead easy to donut a rwd car in snow, and get it pointing the right way.. im not actually kidding on this one, if you have rwd and are pointing the wrong way up a hill, just turn to the right full lock and wheelspin to buggery, should make your way round (be careful if you sence your catching grip thou)

When hand-brake turning in car parks on snow try and avoid sudden transitions from completely frozen and slippy ice/snow to total dry and unslippy tarmac.
I was having fun this morning and flattened a tyre when parking using the sideways technique. The sudden transition from slip to no slip and a large sideways load seems to have let air escape all to rapidly.
OF course it could just be a puncture, I'll find out soon enough! ;(

My one piece of advice when driving in snow/ice is to drive at a speed at least 50% slower than you think you need to. Driving at 15mph is still quicker than walking.

Sublime invention and been on all Vauxhall Autos since Carltons.
If someone hits it when you aren't watching (little kid in passenger seat for example) and then you go to pull out in front of a big truck.... it will pull away mighty slow
BUT...kick down still works so a firm dab on thegas , to the floor, and then into the little "click" zone at the bottom and down she goes to 1st gear again
Some stuff Vauxhall does is good....our autos are very very good...and HARD as nails

Hehe, a Jaguar had a very difficult time beating my Dad in the Vectra a few weeks ago when pulling off from the lights on a dual carriageway and coz my Dad doesn't speed (well with me in the car anyway!) the Jaguar only passed us at 60mph!
erm.. not to be offensive but if a 1.4 astra can beat something i dont think the other guy is really trying...Originally Posted by Big_Al
