    New (used) Car!

My little 1985 Polo 1l (or 0.9l to be accurate ) had to be MoT'd and I knew it wouldn't pass... Garage informed me it would be £400+ to fix! Head gasket gone (oil leak, slowly dwindling power and having to have it ticking over at something like 2,000 rpm, I don't know for sure as no tachometer ^^, or stall...), carb was gunked up or something, alternator belt needed adjusting (think alternator is the right thing?), hand break need adjusting... A long list!

Luckily for me they had a nice little 1997 Seat Ibiza 1.4 SXE (I think that's the correct letters ). Alloys in pretty good nick, and coming from such a small engined car a lot of go in comparison .

Got it for £400! Quite the bargain I think... Seeing as it's only 1 mile up the road from me.

Now, I be posting here for some help! The one thing it misses is a nice audio head unit. I'm looking for one with a radio & CD combo and USB slot so I can plug in me USB stick and listen to my favourite tunes. I been looking on ebuyer and well, it's a jungle for me - I'm not sure what's good and what's not!

So if anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated - I'm looking to spend up to £70 ideally, preferably less but maybe a tad more if you can convince me I'm getting what I pay for!

    Re: New (used) Car!

I found a great deal on ebay for a stereo - £100+ in shops, around £60 on ebay, brand new. Sony do some nice ones: SONY CDX GT410U CD MP3 IN CAR STEREO iPOD Ready USB NEW on eBay, also Sony, CD Headunits MP3 Players, In-Car Entertainment GPS, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 23-Feb-08 09:26:30 GMT)

Doesn't that strike you as convenient? You car is broken it'll cost £400, but luckily we have this other car here for £400? nah just kidding, I don't know why they'd want your old car the new one seems like a really good deal.

Oh, and Aldi sell USB/SD/MP3 CD car stereos for around £40 if you're not bothered what it looks like. (although there's quite a few of these Tevion things on ebay, so they may be rubbish, or they may just be awkward / difficult to fit?)

Nah they didn't want my old car, took it to the scrapyard and got £40! When me dad bought it was £50 so not bad...... however..... when it was his car opposed to mine, he devoted quite some money and time to it so he was sad to see it go .

The new car rocks. Well, comparatively. Lots of fun to drive . Just cleaned it up and it looks shiny! The alloys on the front were a... nuisance... baked in break-dust is evul!

Oh and are all car radios a standard size? If so i'm gonna order one of those Sony things right away, looks good and specs looking nice.

Ooooh one more thing, previous owner had some speakers on the back rack thing above the boot space, so there is some nice shapely holes there. Any recommendations for subs and help for wiring it up? The holes are just asking for something in them! But I have zilch previous experience with sound systems, this being my 2nd car and all.

    Re: New (used) Car!

Most car radios are a standard (DIN) size - apart from a few double din units.

Brake dust is a nightmare - try wonderwheels, parents use it on their cars (BBS alloys on one, Porsche OE on the other) and its brilliant stuff. Hasn't damaged the wheels despite being brilliant at getting rid of burnt on brake dust

The first bit maybe! The 2nd bit, noes! Maybe if I don't have a new car before the tires need replacing. This car is just a cheapy high-milage run-about till i've got something a little fancier (though not too much fancier, i'm thinking £4,000 max ).

You could at least take the daft seatbelt cushions off.

Other than that, looks like it could be a great buy!

    Re: New (used) Car!

Total price now has come to £464 .

Replaced the passenger-side glove box as it was fubared for £58 (from breakers, £116 new :|), and a new gear box oil seal for £6. Seeing how the car was going to be £500 but we got 'em down to £400; I'm quite chuffed that all the issues are now sorted for less than original price .

Oh and that excludes my head unit and speakers for the back, £580 ish with that , but i'll be transferring that to my next purchase.
