    Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser questions...

I ought to have one fitted to the Scooby, which definately doesn't have an alarm (not sure about immobiliser) or RCL. Anyone had an aftermarket system fitted? I would hope my insurance might be reduced, but I'm after preventing the car getting nicked really Thatcham approved systems seem to be more expensive, for a reason you would think...

    Any experiences/advice?

I had a Toad Ai606 fitted to my CRX. It was very good, and I had it removed so it could be reused and it's currently still going strong in another car.

Does your insurance not require a thatcham approved alarm/immobiliser for a Scooby? If not, who are you with just out of interest. I was looking at a Scooby/Evo a while ago, and everywhere I went they were asking me what alarm/immobiliser it had because they're so popular with thieves.

Clifford make some very good alarms from my recollection but aren't cheap if you want one with all the bells and whistles.

I'm with the AA - not a requirement afaik. Clifford seem to be the top-end stuff, not sure I need the remote start option..

I had a Thatcham alarm and immobiliser installed on my old car and not once in 7 years did an insurer give me a discount - in my experience the only time they care is when they require one.

Hi, youre just down the road from me, i used to work in a Subaru/Isuzu gararge, and if's its a UK car 97 on (R plate) it should have one already fitted.
any how, make sure you get on that thatcham cat 1 approved, it could save you £300 per year !!

It's a Feb 98 ('R') UK model - no alarm (just a regular key with non-remote central locking) and a red light which flashes on the dash when the car is switched off...

    Re: Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser questions...

oh, must be a 96my. is it 4 or 5 door, bucket seats or normal? Anyway all 99my impreza turbo's (newer style dash with passengers airbag) had a sigma alarm fitted as standard, (well actually at the dock's before sending out to dealers) My advice would be get one of these Sigma Alarms installed, you will be able to get a Subaru branded key remote, which is kinda cool. the remote is slimline & only has one button on it, you hardly know you've got it on your key ring, as a dealer we fitted this sigma alarm to non-turbo impreza models and Legacy's etc as an upgrade, discarding the Sigma fob, and replacing with the Subaru branded one (the fob is exactly the same, but branded Subaru)

    hope that helps

So, it has an immobiliser only... transponder is within each key

    Re: Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser questions...

Hi James, if its a UK 98 Prodrive version, it must be a Limited edition Catalunya or a Terzo? (RB5 came out in 99) both had alarms fitted as standard.
Are you sure it is a UK car and not a prodrive Import (WRX for example). tell tell signs are rear fog lamp fitted under bumper! if its non-UK, it may not have a transponder type key.

Anyhow we got off subject, my advise is to go with the Sigma, and dont get talked into somthing else. another point, you'll need to get a remote cental locking actuator fitted on the N/S front door to the alarm to work correctly.

Let us know how you get on

    Re: Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser questions...

..........now i've thought a little more it can't be a Catalunya, the Catalunya was the pre 98 model (with out the passengers airbag) and glass headlamps (plastic ones came out in late 98)
The only prodrive model in 98 was the Terzo

    Re: Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser questions...

It's a standard UK model, but was sent to Prodrive to have the performance package fitted - so a Prodrive version of sorts. What's a Sigma alarm when it's at home - is it a brand or a type? Who could fit it?

edit: it's just occurred to me that the alarm may be fitted - am I looking for a horn/siren under the bonnet somewhere?

    Re: Aftermarket alarm/immobiliser questions...

Check in the glove box for a keypad, this keypad allows you to start the car fir you lose the remote or if it fails to work, along with reprograming, fobs and alot more.
