I wouldn't trust it tbh.... There is a Jet station at the back of the Supermarket in the next village and Jon is always having Cars come in the Garage he works at with problems after filling up there

I always fill up at the BP or Texaco Garages

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

it's probably because it's cheaper than anywhere else... and if there's been no problems with the motor then it' likely to be ok - after all, like Zak pointed out in the GD thread, petrol just works - if it's "bad" petrol, then it doesn't work at all

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

My dad's car (2002 Suzuki Swift, which I will soon buy off him) used to be filled up with cheap supermarket fuel, but the engine started making some odd noises. He changed to only using Shell/Texaco/etc and he said it soon went back to normal.

Some other people I know never use supermarket fuel either. Apparently there was an interview with a supermarket fuel rep who, when questioned about unnecessary additives (i.e. silicon in petrol as well as the necessary diesel), kept saying "conforms to EU regs", but when pushed got a bit flustered. I would be interested in seeing a copy/transcript of this interview if anyone knows of it.

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

Tesco petrol is pretty much all Shell apparently - the high octane stuff is apparently optimax in another tin according to the local BMW dealership..

Apparently ASDA petrol is the worse as it will come from any supplier who can provide it the cheapest, Morrisons is apparently pretty bad too.

Have a mate that worked for a petrol company designing fuel additive packages, the ones that are included in the standard and performance petrol you get from major (Shell, BP, etc) petrol suppliers (not sainsburys, tesco, etc). He drives an old grenada and still fills up every other tank at shell or BP. All the work he did on designing these additives convinces him that they are worth putting in any car, even old ones. Hes a PhD chemists that worked in the petrochemical industry for 30+ years.

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

If Tesco fuel is largely Shell why did they have prooblems with anti foaming? My understanding of the insdustry is that the white pump sellers buy on the bulk market so it can come from any refinery, and wont have the same additive packages added that sheel etc do. High end stuff could be seperately treated.

I buy shell as they're consistently the cheapest around, even below tesco prices.

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

I mostly fill up with Tesco diesel just because they're on my way to/from work and they give me points for clubcard deals. They're no cheaper than anywhere else and I've never noticed the slightest difference in performance between different types of diesel in my mum's P-reg Clio 1.9D.

I also never noticed a difference between different brands when I was putting petrol in my Kawasaki ER-5- or, a few years ago, in my Mk1 MR2. Quite why I'm collecting the clubcard points so assiduously I don't know either, since I found that I couldn't pay for my wife's OU course with them. Guess I should get some Eurostar tickets or something, I probably have a couple of hundred quid's worth of deals by now.

The additives are there for long term engine life, not short term performance.

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

Since I have to run 98 RON I have always used optimax and now v power from shell. I use tesco when I have to but try not to as me and my dad both have noticed that is rubbish for fuel economy. Consistantly get 10 - 15% less miles out of a tank when running it.

I've tried Morrisons and Sainsburys fuel before and they always make my engine sound louder and rougher for some reason.. so I tend to stick with Shell.

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

I've fuled up in different places, and to be honest I don't see any difference in one brand of petrol to another, and I primarily fill her up in Tesco because they are the easiest to get to and Mum usually gives me a 5p off every litre voucher

That said, I drive a Vectra, I mean it's not the worlds best engine around is it ??

Re: My sister ALWAYS fills up at Tesco - is that bad?

When I had the Subaru I found that the best of the ultimate (98+ RON) fuels was actually the Tesco Super Unleaded. It gave me the most miles out of a tank full, and was quite reasonably priced.
