Roads over the last two days

The last couple of days I thought my tires had given up the ghost and the tread had all gone, front end having no grip at all, corners i usually do at 30mph, i was going sideways at 25. I couldn't figure it out, I'd put it down to the tread and having to urgently purchase two new fronts.

That was until I decided to speak to some other people at work about this, seems that it is incredibly slippy on the roads round here, even my Dad who I quite frankly worship as a driver agreed with me.

The only thing i'm not sure about is why it happened like this?, i know roads can get greasy when its been dry for a long time and we get some rain, but this isn't the case at the moment - or at least i don't think so?. So whats causing the crappy road conditions?.

Anyone else experiencing this elsewhere in the country, other than bedfordshire?. Anything you can do or be careful of when this happens?

    salt gritters

and the huge amount of rain washing impurities from the fields and grass areas onto the road

cold tarmac, and therefore cold tyres, causing less grip

and your car prob does need new tyres anyway.

less than 2 mm is deadly with your horsepower

new set of boots I think....wil help twofold

A: muchos deeper tread disperses water 10000 times better

B: confidence in your head...worth more than gold

Sure you are not practising drift techniques?

Sounds like something on the roads ... unless its the type of tyre, I dunno ... weird and scary. If it IS something on the roads, not much you can do but go a bit slower to be safe.

Yup, i've noticed this too... same thing, going sideways on bends that I normally take much faster in the same conditions and w/spinning part way rounnd a r-about ? Needless to say i've slowed down a bit, but I don't have a big car or drive very fast anyway...

    Sorry,Gr.Manchester and Cheshire areas...

Can't say I've noticed a great deal of difference around here. Islands are a little slippy but nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe there's been a diesel leak or something around your area? Or maybe that actually gritted your roads properly.

I have noticed it slippy over the last two days. Stuff I normally do was resulting in a bit of loss of front end grip. Tyres are fine with 4mm +

Heh slippery stuff has gone, probably down to two new fronts, to match the rest, they are continental ContiSport N1's, apparently speaking to the guy today they are actually porcshe tires by design, the octavia just nicked them for the VRS.

But as this is the case and the tires are an odd 205/50/R17 they are blooming expensive.

£314 they just cost with full tracking done on all 4 tires to ensure i don't waste them too quickly. I feel justified as they feel superb even after the 50 mile jaunt i had this afternoon after buying them.

Zak's right - it also feels like a boost in confidence, not meaning i'm going mad with them, but just piece of mind

I'll be needing at least 2 new tyres very soon as well.... Best price I could come up with for 235/45*17's is £99/tyre for Dunlop SP9000 (ones that are on the car ATM)
