I wrote to my Local Council..

I sent this e-mail to my local council after Terri suffered damage to her car -


"Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing to enquire as to how I can apply to recoup the cost of damage to my car as a direct result of damage caused by a pot-hole on Meadfield Rd, Langley.

On Monday 2nd feb at approx 5.30 pm I approached the speed restriction posts approximately halfway down Meadfield road, and upon slowing to negotiate these posts was violently shaken by an impact to my offside front wheel, this impact was caused by a substantial pot-hole surrounding a drainage cover at the entrance to the speed restriction.



The following day I found my tyre deflated and upon subsequent closer inspection my alloy wheel was damaged by way of a small impact to the inner rim.

This is not the first time I have had to pay for costs as a direct result of pot-holes and poor driving surfaces on local roads, and as someone who regularly pays Council Tax and Road Tax I feel that this is unacceptable.

Whilst I appreciate that wear and tear is an unfortunate side effect of heavy road-use, these pot-holes should be identified and repaired earlier so that incidents like this are avoided.

I would therefore be most grateful if the Council could advise me of the necessary steps and procedures in this matter.

Dear Ms Humphries,

We are endeavouring to set up a higher quantity of speed cameras in your area to fund the repairs to your wheel and tyre,and also to repair the afforementioned hole in the road surface.

We are gratefull for your regular contribution to the Council Tax in your district, noting of course that if you failed to pay you would recieve a criminal record, and possibly a custodial sentence, so we fail to see what the f that has to do with us fixing a hole made by trucks from another continent coming over
here to undercut the local haulage companies, just because fuel is taxed so highly here in the UK, that its not competitive to be a UK haulier. The French and German HGV vehicles causing the problem are in excess of our own size and weight maximums but we are unable to prevent them, because thayt would be discrimination and Brussels would come get us.

So in essence.....while we feel a tad sorry for you, it is with some smugness that we point out that well all have company cars, with way above average values, and allpayed for by yourself, and if we needed such a repair, the council's coffers would cough up and not us.

My Mum had this happen, hit a pot hole just before a bridge where we used to live in Feltham and blew both tyres on the left hand side of the car! Without such as a flinch, she calmy carried on driving over the bridge and down the other side with two flat tyres and pulled into a layby after the bridge! My Mum is so cool! :P

Yep - Anyone on these forums wants to take issue with me - they know where i live ;)

i managed to claim for a damaged wheel before with my local council,had to take pictures of the damage and multiple pics of the pothole from different angles lol

I damaged a wheel on a pothole near swansea once. I was going to try and claim some compensation, but then went to the local wheel/tyre shop, and they sorted it all out.

Its not an alloy, so they just used a hammer to get it perfectly circular again, sorted the tyre out, refitted it all, and balanced the tyres.

Total cost to me: £3.50. I love that place! :D :D

pot holes around my way aren't too bad, i love country lane driving (which there is a few around my place) so i expect them to be a bit rough! LOL

theres a big fat hole on the road side of a drancover thats located right in the inside of a roundabout near me, and the roundabouts normally good to take a straight line and whizz round... solution... drive over the draincover instead :)

When I damaged my car by running over a pothole, they sent a council man out to meet me and measure it up, then filled it in, then sent me a letter to say it had been filled in so there was no proof.

Confused? I was too.
