August and you're already sick of being wet? Sissy

Re: I am officially an old man :(

Top choice and top advice from the one and only Zakkinator.

Two days ago I took works 55-plate 1.4 through 60k and most of our 1.8s have already broken the 70k barrier. 5 are due for replacement before Chrissy and I've my fingers crossed we'll see more Civic's. Only problem is the Auris isn't selling as well so I suspect it'll those instead (we have to have cars we make stuff for).

Car tax has driven the plant manager from a new CRV into a Civic so I'll be lumping miles on the CRV as well soon

I still reckon the Civic is a great car and am very pleased to see more people joining the Honda fold!

Good man, can't fault the Civic, it's great in every way, with the exception of the Type-R, the diesel is probably the the one I would have gone for too, my brothers got the 1.4i, it's nippy around town even though it has a small engine. Presuming your probably getting around mid-30's in town?

Zak seems like the one to consult if you're interested in a new motor. I'll note that.

Plus Dave, is it only the bad weather conditions that made you give up your bike? I was thinking of keeping my car and also learning to ride a bike, have always been keen but not got around to doing it because of the practicality of needing a large vehicle.

lol you cheeky git. It was mainly because I was using it to commute/mode of transport rather than purely as a weekend toy.

I must admit if it wasn't for that I'd have just bought a Fazer, still love biking, just unfortunately cannot do both

I was honestly surprised, it was Parm's post of his car, and my dear ol' Mum's suggestion, and it ended up winning out over my thoughts such as the Mini Cooper (&S), C30, Astra and Suzuki Swift. As a total package (and for the figure I got this car) the value was unbeatable.

Yea, 35 or there abouts seems the norm, probably a bit higher without being a pillock with the throttle. Must have been averaging 43/44 on the journey from Home to Essex as it brought my average to 41. Not bad for the first 180 miles you drive a new car

Yup, purely that as a method of commuting five minutes down the road, it wasn't really the best way. I know some will point out I should walk, but ner

If it was purely for fun, then yes I would. Dad's got two bikes now, I wonder if.....

Wasn't the running costs that did it, it was residuals and the drive, which I preferred to the VTEC petrol. If it had been the same engine as in the TypeR in the five door, it would have been tempting, but then I think the insurance and petrol costs may have been higher than I would have been comfortable with.

I don't expect to see too much of a saving on the fuel bill in this car, but I'm liking the lower rate of VED (Tax) £120 this year, £110 next, £115 the year after

Re: I am officially an old man :(

Heh, I wish that were the case, though in most of these cases it probably user (dealership) error, rather than anything particularly wrong with the car.

The first thing that annoyed me slightly was due to the dealership not doing something they had agreed to do before I picked up the car. One of the wheels had some marks on it from (what looked like) someone slipping with a wheelnut gun, parts of which had gone through the lacquer. This wasn't a problem, as they'd touched it up with some clear lacquer, but I'd asked for it to be refurbished, with their agreement.

Cue three weeks later when I'd gone to pick up the car, and it hadn't been done. Oh, not a problem sir, we had a look at it and are happy with it. However, when I asked for them to write a letter on headed paper stating they would replace the wheel should it corrode from the marks they would replace the wheel under warranty. At this point they were suddenly very happy to have the wheel refurbished, and asked me to pick a date of my convenience. (Going in Monday)

Drove it back up to Norwich, and all was good, apart from a slight tug to the left on straight roads. Obviously I was concerned about this, but didn't bother me too much due to it being only slight and possibly due to the two new tyres on the front. I thought I'd arrange to get it done at the same time as it goes in for the wheel, so haven't found out what it is.

If it had stopped there, then it would have been just the typical new car niggles, and I wouldn't have thought anything more. But it didn't.

Having driven home and a fair few miles in both Essex and Norfolk, I'd used the Windscreen washers a fair few times, but thought it odd that I'd never seen the headlamp washers do anything (they are quite noticeable on the Volvo Mum has). So on the drive, leaning my head out the windows trying to get the headlamp washers to trigger. Nothing. Consult manual (and as anyone who knows a 20 year old, this is the last resort) lights have to be on. Odd, as I've had them on before, still nothing. Time for a trip to the dealers.

Before I'd had a chance to organise that, I'd been driving and heard a clunk. Thought nothing more of it as it sounded like it was a stone hitting the inside of one of the arches. That was until I got home and noticed half of the plastic (or rubber?) strip between the roof and the windscreen had come off. Thought it was a fluke, put it back and thought nothing more. Shame however, as everytime I'd gone over 60mph it happened. Went into the dealership up here, and was told there was a recall to fix such an issue, and that it had already been applied to my car. However after one of the service advisors had looked at it, he concluded no such recall had been applied to my car.

Ok, I'll get it booked in and looked at, was done the next day. The result? The headlamp washer fuse had been removed and the product update (recall) had definitely not been applied, and now has.

Fair enough, at least the dealership up here were fine, bent over backwards to help and got it sorted promptly. But surely a car and its features should have been checked before being left with a customer?

Oh, and just to add insult to injury, I thought as I'm doing an equally long journey on Sunday, I'd check the lights. All the main ones work fine, but no matter what I do, I cannot get the fog lights to come on. So back again it goes to the dealership. What are the bets its another fuse that is missing?

Ah well, at least it can only get better from here.

EDIT - appears the post is longer than I anticipated

    Oh dear, bad luck!

But can't you check the fuses yourself? And what on earth do you want fog lights for?

dave sorry you've had these issues.
One of our's had the screen-seal issue but that was fixed two years ago so I hadn't thought to mention it. I wonder if the previous owner was particularily innattentive or never drove over 60!

Shame your having to have so much contact with the dealer, no matter how helpful they are - after the event. Hopefully once this has been fixed you won't see them again until the next service!

I could, but I shouldn't have to. It turned out to be another missing fuse.

Fog Lights, don't you know in Essex fog lights make you go quicker in all lights? (j/k)

In all seriousness they are an optional extra, and as such I'd want them working.

Wouldn't you be a bit miffed if you'd paid just short of 11k only to find your car comes with 2 less fuses than it should? Begs the question whether the pre delivery inspection or used car inspection was actually done....

I think we'd all be a little bit miffed, but if it was me I'd accept the fact that car dealers are (and probably always will be) useless when it comes to attention to detail like this, save myself some fuel and check basic things like fuses at home. It will almost certainly be covered in the handbook.

Re: I am officially an old man :(

Shad - you are probably right, but before going to the dealership I didn't know whether it was going to be a fuse or a warranty issue, and as such left it in the hands of the dealership.

I must admit, on such a new car I didn't even consider the fuses should be missing, so I presumed it was a pair of non functioning headlamp washers, and as it needed to go in for the strip at the top of the roof to be fixed, I could get it done at the same time.

If I was more mechanically minded, and didn't have the warranty, then it would have been something I would have sorted myself or with the aid of family. But certainly shouldn't happen within 7 days (picked up on the 22nd) of owning an 'Approved Used' car.

Oh, and have you seen the handbook? Its a good few inches thick lol. (and all in english)

Re: I am officially an old man :(

I completely agree, it should all work and be as you would expect, and it shouldn't be down to the customer to do the fault finding (or fixing). But I believe a little give and take goes a long way to building a good relationship with a dealer, assuming they're worth the effort

Sounds like an impressive handbook! Does it cover fuses?
