Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
Anyone got any advice on obtaining both of the above?
Not sure if i am doing something wrong but I seem to be getting quotes of around £2k - £3k which I think is quite extortionate , although I am only 19 and have just passed my test !
As for a first car, any particular advice on a model or what to look for in a car?
I was thinking a Suzuki Swift - I have seen an 01 model of this car with 61,000 on the clock for just over a grand. Seems very economical and seems to be well regarded as a new drivers car.
Any advice much appreciate :)
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
I have a 2002 Swift and get about 50mpg on my work journey. Cheapest insurance (age 26, license for 3+ years, first ever car & insurance) was £480 after £100 Quidco with Prudential.
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
Those do sound quite expensive,
My brother was 19 and driving a sporty model corsa and he was quoted 900 (TPFT) and we live a shockingly bad post code.
The best advice i can give is start with the comparison websites, then try any others you can think of online, once you have done this hit the freephone numbers in the yellow pages.
Really just shop around, some insurers just pluck random numbers out of thin air i am sure of it.
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
Direct line were good for me a few years ago, as said use the comparison sites to vaguely see who's cheapest then go DIRECTLY to that insurers site, and I have usually found its cheaper than going through confused.com etc.
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
tesco.com was always and is still cheapest for me (21 2 years ncd) - they were cheapest back when i had my old car too, but i insured all mods, and tesco dont allow mods, so i had to whack another £800 on my insurance bill to stay legal :(
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
@Stiggeh - where was that quote of 900 from, if you dont mind divulging?
@ Others - Oh, i thought the Swift 1.0 would be cheap as its a small engine and economical.
Im looking at both a 1997 model with 37k ont he clock and a 2001 model with 61k on the clock.
Hmm, I must be doing something wrong I reckon with my quote gathering. Will try going direct tonigt I think.
Didnt think the swift would be dearer than a sporty type car for sure ! a 1.0 would suit me down tot he ground for petrol economy as I am no boy racer !!
Nobody else here have an older swift as opposed to the newer ones?
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
I've got a Civic 2.2CDTi at 20, but I have 3 years NCB and it came out at 1175 fully comp.
That said, when I was 19 and only had the 2 years NCB, even slow cars were coming out £1700+ :(
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
Something just keeps me looking at the Swift lol dont know why maybe its because well, its not as much a commonlpace car as say a corsa or whatnot. But that 2001 swift has my attention firmly.
Ive been reading up about Insurances etc maybe I should see if i can get some sort of family deal via direct line to insure me.
Or, maybe I should consider something other than the swift - but in my head a 1.0 should surely be the lowest cost to ensure over everything else?!
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
MurphmanL , do you really need one?
If not then you could spend money on doing things like IAM and pass plus, they can help lower it a fair bit before you get your car, and also get experience in the mean time
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
yeah it would be beneficial to have one really so I can get to work and bac , atm i have to either walk a fair trek or sometimes im lucky and get a lift in from mum.
Pass plus coming up in October, by which point i assume I can then get the rebate pro-rata on the insurance?
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
I've had a 1999 T reg swift for about 5 years. Solid car that took alot of abuse from me. Little 997cc engine so was utterly gutless but did town and motorway driving fine and returned great MPGs. Insurance was free for like a year (came with the purchase of the car) but after that, it was really cheap to insure.

Yes. I think it's about the only car whose design wasn't updated in about 13 years. It's ancient and rubbish. Either buy an older one for about £200, or something better if you're spending more. A Fiesta 1.25 would be a far better car, for example.
Where have you been getting quotes? Try sites directly like Bell and Admiral, instead of confused.com or whatnot.
Smaller car/engine doesn't always mean cheaper insurance either, btw. You might find insuring less "common" young person's cars (read: less likely to be crashed) will be cheaper
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
My 2002 Swift (bought for £1000 six months ago) has about 72,000 on the clock and it runs fine - it was well-maintined. On the first day I had it, I had the bonet up (oiling the bonet catch, checking wires/tubes, etc) and a passer-by said the engine looked good and offered £1000 for the car :)
The only thing annoying that it's a bit creaky - all the interior plastics could do with being tightened, but I ain't gonna disassemble it.
Re: Cheapest New Driver Insurance/Car ?
i had to pay almost a grand for my first year insurance (aged 22 i think, 1.1l fiat seicento)
insurance is 'spensive
