Surely there'll be a fault logged if something's sending into LOS?
Its going into limp mode... the ECU triggers this if it detects something that could damage the engine..
If its a TDI itll probably be turbo-related (dodgy MAF readings, underboost/overboost) - if its a petrol itll be a sensor.. you would know about it if a coilpack had gone as it would run like a bag of spanners all the time.
A dealer will read the fault codes stored... youl also probably find if you switch the igntion off and then back on again the engine will be back to normal.. the fact you say its intermittant and no lights on the dash tells me its very intermittant.. the ecu will log a fault but will only put the engine warning light on if it happens twice in a few restart-cycles.
I had a similar fault with my fabia vRS (1.9Tdi) - it would only do it when cold, but basically it was going into limp mode and logging a code to say the actual boost pressure was lower than the requested boost... that was down to a sticking VNT actuator that a good spray of WD40 sorted
There are no lights on the dashboard ... The dealer couldnt find anything diagnostic in the fault codes. They suspect its the turbo, but they are reluctant to replace it just to check whether it is the fault.

Sinizter, I can't see the turbo putting you down to 40mph, I'd go for fuel blockage first, new filter and clear the lines.
You got this the wrong way round, a coil pack by it's name is a pack of coils, a 6 cylinder car will have 1 coil pack with 3 or 6 coils, most common 3 feeding 2 cylinders each.
If yours has 1 per cylinder then it's 1 coil per cylinder.
When you turn off, the dirt falls, then slowly builds up again.
Just a guess, I can't fix it over the net, lol.
