Salvage squad and a VW Golf?

Why did VW buy out a complete ad slot for their golf during Salvage Squad?

Are things really that bad with reliability? Yes, i believe VW is no longer the unbreakable tank that it once was with some skodas getting better scores in JD Power consumer tests(which admittedly takes other things into account apart from reliability too). But putting it into a salvage squad slot is a bit of a weird move.

good ads though - apart from the adolf lookalike in the waistcoat!

yeah, golfs aren't what they once were - the Mk3 is where it all started to go downhill...

VW reliability is a myth created entirely by skillful marketing. In fact I was a keen reader of Which? motoring sections in the 80s and they were pretty average reliability wise.

bizarrely, in the us vws aren't seen as solid, reliable, boring cars - they're seen as quirky, unusual cars. strange eh?

That'll be why I never saw that many of them in Canada!
I saw more Boras (Jettas over there) than golf TBH
    And I don't think I saw a single Passat

For some reason my Dad decided to start buying VWs a few years ago. **** knows why, although I inherited the family Nissan Praerie so I wasn't complaining. The Polo he bought in '98 has been pretty average reliability wise and is sh1t to drive. His '02 golf I've never driven and I guess it's too new to have gone wrong yet, but I'm not that impressed by it in any case.

i quite like golfs. i was offered a mk2 GTi by my m8's brother last nite for £700. i'm considerin buyin it too, considerin its in damn good condition, as well as the alloys on it are worth twice the price he's askin no chance of gettin insured on it for a while (i'm 18and it'd be my 1st car ), maybe get it as a project.

if war is the answer, then we are asking the wrong question

heard a lot recently about how Golf's aren't reliable.

All I can say is that using my own experience as a reference (not some magazine that I once read...) that Golf's are bloody reliable. Mines coming upto 12 months old and has never missed a beat, started 1st time every time.

Quite a few of my mates have Golf's ranging from Mark III's to Mark V's. None of us have ever had any major problems, only a few minor niggles etc.

So IMHO and experience Golf's are reliable cars, they are also bloody safe. A friend runs a scrap company that deals in serious car crashes, he drives a Golf, nuff said...

My 1995 80k miles peugeout 106 starts every time too . I would expect a new car to be trouble free for the first couple years, apart from servicing and consumables. Which isn't always the case

Hence we should expect better reliability off new cars than just starting first time.

Apart from a dodgy coil-pack issue which was replaced for free by VW, I've got no complaints whatsoever, the lump in my VW is one of the best set of cylinders I've ever sat behind, a little thirsty at times, but 3 years on I'm still a happy bunny.

Skii: Yeah, I've had no probs so far, but then you shouldn't expect any probs (as mentioned) in newish cars.

But also as mentioned, problems do occur in new models, I've had various problems with new Fords/Rovers/Pugs but my VW has been good so far.

Will report back in 5 years, hehe

Yeah true - its still fairly newish, I would say keep a full service history and you are asking for a lot less problems
