    Re: GPS for car

    Checkout this site:

    http://www.gpsmagazine.com/reviews.php

I'll warn you that it's possibly quite garmin biassed, but if you want to know what the GPS can do and how you'd go about using it, it's definitely a good place to start. Checkout some amazon reviews too for some real world perspectives.

On the site above, I'd probably look at the Garmin nuvi 265WT as it's inside your price range and identical to the 225WT just with the added bluetooth.

It seems to be a little confusing how Garmin have named their models - it's not chronologically-numeric. From what I understand, the models ending in 5 are the latest. So the 765 is an updated version of the 760. Took me a while to realise that the 255 is actually a pretty new model (or at least an updated version of an older model).

    Re: GPS for car

For your info only, after a short period of consideration I'm getting a Garvin 255WT, mainly for the lifetime traffic info service.

(also, the 255, which has Europe maps, is only £7 more on Amazon than the 205, which doesn't).

    Re: GPS for car

It might be a bit late to join this thread but how about the Navman models?

I have the S50 (cost me just over £100) and for what I wanted it has done me well and has never failed to get me to my destination - I had an incident a little while ago where a road had been closed and as I went past the turning for it, it had a little think and recalculated and still got me to where I needed to be

It includes blue-tooth so it automatically connects to my phone when I switch it on and has a couple of handy little features such as your estimated time of arrival etc

I must admit, I didn't need the Europe or World maps and the camera wasn't high on my list of priorities when I looked at the higher models but for a cheap decent unit I wouldn't dismiss them

    Re: GPS for car

Just a few thoughts on the 255WT that I got yesterday.

It's very good + easy to use. Everything I read was true. Just 2 small points:

    1. There's no text to speech at all. I checked up on the garmin site after I got it, and it looks like this is only in the North American model. I've no idea why as I'd have thought they would all use the same software. Bit of a shame really.
    2. I was under the impression that speed limits were supposed to be displayed. The garmin site says "where available", so since I've only driven a few miles to the shops and back, that may be why. Or it might be the North American thing again...

Apart from those two things though, it looks like it's a very good unit .

The only other one I was even thinking about getting was the 765T, but that's another £100, so was a bit too much anyway.

    Re: GPS for car

    Thread-resurrection time.

I'm looking at just the same thing - I want to buy a cheapish (£100 mark) GPS satnav.

I was looking at the Garmin 255W the other day on Amazon. Is that still a good model, or would anybody recommend something else?

I've got the older 250 above with the European maps and its been very good never had a problem with it. The battery seems to last forever to. Friends have also commented on its ease of use, but all sat navs are easy to use in my experience...

F & H 3.5" Portable Satellite Navigation System £39.99 at W.H Smiths - I don't think £100 is classed as cheapish anymore for a satnav (although time has moved on)

I bought the F&H 4.3" from Ebuyer recently for £56.99 nice unit at a sensible price.

Although I own a TomTom, I say go for a Garmin. Dad got one for his car last year and it's knocks the spots off my TomTom. My TomTom has yet to take me door to do where as Dad's Garmin has every time I've used it

    Re: GPS for car

I was looking into these recently. The 765 is a very old model - but I guess that means you get more for the money, though things like screen refresh/map redrawing is apparently quite jerky on the older models. I was looking at something like the 1390T which is well recommended.
