Car Accident

Hi to all

I would like some advice on a incident that happen while i was in the doctor's surgery car park
While i was in the doctor's, So body has hit my car while the my car was parked and gone
From the car park camera, i have the car number plate and informed the police. The police have called me and said the car was stolen and i will have to get the car repaired under my insurance.

This cant be right as this wasnt even my fault, yet i have to pay to get the damaged done

Would this be equivalent to being hit by an uninsured driver? Depending on who you are with then this could be a good thing (keep your no claims etc).

Unlikely that the thieves bothered to get insurance for the car they were about to steal, so yes, you have to cover it. Although, you will be able to sue the thieves for compensation if you want.

So the best thing is to claim on my own insurance and then sue for compensation !!!!!
It does seem hash that the biggest loser is ME. all whilst i was parked in a car park

That would be presuming that you knew who the thieves were and that you could prove it was them.

More realistically I think your options are to claim it on your own insurance and then let it go.

This is why I ticked the "keep your no claims if hit by an uninsured driver" box on my insurance quote.

There is always the Motor Insurance Bureau (MiB) but they take a while.

presumably, the best people to speak to regards this would be your insurers, most have vandalism cover and similar policies, which will cover you against this, but leave your NCB intact

It's not that much different from the situation if you have your car broken into - you have to pay the excess and claim on your insurance to get it fixed even though you did no wrong. It's infuriating to say the least. That's why I pay for protected NCD.

That's why I pay for protected NCD.

Unfortunately you can only protect 4 or more years of NCB - which rules most of us younger drivers out (those who often pay the highest premiums I might add).


Fortunately I will have 4 years NCB when I renew (touch wood) so I can tick that option. Screwed if anything happens this year though...

I tend to tick the 'I'll repair it myself' box when it comes to such things. You just have to add up the cost of the damage over the additional cost of having a fault claim (and it's a fault against you if the police don't convict the people that did it) vs getting it done outside of insurance.

Speak to insurers. If you've video evidence of the incident, surely its then down to the registered owner to either declare who was driving or report the car as taken without consent?

If you have legal cover your insurance might help with the second part of that as well. Or they might just go after them themselves to recoup costs.
