Subtly Modified Corsas (older ones) - possible?

It just occurred to me that I've never seen an older shape corsa with after market alloys that didn't look like a micro machine on matchbox wheels. The just sit out all wrong and end up making the thing look like a luna rover. Have they some kind of crazy offset?

    Which got me thinking.....

the older corsa is probably the worst car for wearing any sort of modifications I can think of. OK, we all now how stupid big plastic wings and glued on bonnet scoops look on anything, but many of us would agree that the more subtle changes can suit a car (clear indicators, higher spec bumpers etc etc).

I don't have any feelings about how corsas look either way, they're plain enough to ignore. But there's just something about them that means the moment they're anything other than standard they look like they've been tarted up with the bits of plastic given away with that mornings cornflakes.

    Agreed

I think it's mainly because you can't really modify them and improve the looks, bar a set of nice wheels perhaps. This is the case with most little shopping cars IMO, besides from maybe using OEM parts from higher spec models, GSI or whatnot.

It's the same with Clios, etc. The 16v/Williams models look ace, but a barry'd up one doesn't. Ever.

Re: Subtly Modified Corsas (older ones) - possible?

To my mind the biggest mistake made a lot of the time is with wheels and suspension, but especially with corsas, they just go too big.

Most cars (IMO) can suit wheels about 1" bigger than standard, sometimes 2", but to look good there usually needs to be a suspension drop so that the gap in the wheel arch is not bigger than the side profile of the tyre. Increasing wheel size by 1" and putting shorter springs with about a 30mm drop can look quite subtle and if you use OEM wheels from a higher version or bigger model from the same manufacturer looks even better.

The mistake seen so often on Corsas is that they go too big with the wheels and don't drop it, or if they did they would have to drop it so much it looks daft. If modifiers of corsas were to put 15" wheels on with a drop to even the gap it would probably look decent, but so many times they go for 17/18" with a tiny profile tyre.

I remember at uni, a corsa on 19s....that was hilarious. The wheels must have cost more than the car.

Re: Subtly Modified Corsas (older ones) - possible?

I have to admit that I like my cars to look standard. I tend to choose cars I like the look of in the first place rather than regarding them as a blank canvas on which to unleash my artistic skills. I don't think I could do a better job than professionally trained automotive designers. I might not like what the designer has done, but I just wouldn't buy that car.

Regarding wheels, I think most ridiculous things you ever see on cars are big wheels with widely spaced spokes revealing a miniscule rusty drum brake.

Re: Subtly Modified Corsas (older ones) - possible?

Most Corsa B's seem to have silly money spent on modification such as large alloys and especially bodykits. I saw an especially daft one at the odeon cinema in basingstoke, bodykit + OCZ alloys which looked really out of place, and the best part ... drums on the rear, and powered by a 1 litre If i'm being nice to Corsa owners the corsa C with astra multi spoke 15" alloys fitted, slightly lowered, smoked rear lights can look quite good.

The big thing I really don't get is why people waste spending the money in the first place especially if the car isnt even remotly quick to begin with

Small city type runarounds generally look rubbish being modified in any way, unless its a manufacturer body kit, wheels etc.

However a nice 200/SKyline/RX/Subaru - most things Jap if done correctly and the owner has stayed away from Halfords can look stunning.

Re: Subtly Modified Corsas (older ones) - possible?

its the same with any model that kids can get thier hands on... as its the age when you are most likely to want to stick tat on your car, rarely do you see the more expensive scoobys and evos modded badly, like, newer BM's and Mercs... because the type of people who can afford them dont want to bother with it... any car thats £1k or less is pretty much fair game to be barried to first car owners looking to get restepca from thier mates...

but there are the odd few that do them nicely (read subtly) u just have to know where to look...

a couple of years ago, when i had my modified vauxhall astra, i went to the performance vauxhall show, and there were some stunning corsa's/astras/calibr... infact, every model, there was a stunning example...

generally enthusiasts care about how thier cars look and try to be more subtle...

... mcdonalds carpark louts, tend not to be... and the 2 groups are rarely intertwined... but often get set into the same group...

    Found one!

    Sadly I also found this;

Some ~18k Audi gave up its mouth to be tacked to the front of a Corsa

    |TAKTAK: "It was so small that mine wouldn't fit into it"|

All you have to do is put "Corsa" into Google image search and you get all different kinds of nasty.
