    Drilling out broken nuts...

Was doing some work on the car today and two of the bolts on the anti roll bar had snapped off. It's been welded on for now but needs fixing really.. would it pass the MOT like that? What kind of kit would I need to drill them out? They look like heavy duty bolts...

    Cheers

I think most things would pass the MOT! Easy removal of things is not important so long as the cage is legal. Before you drill it out, could you cut a new grove in the screw this is often easier, spray the bolt with lots of WD40 as well. Drilling in general is bad and can damage things as it slips, it only really works as a way to remove the head. If its a bolt and nut, and the things it connects though are NOT threaded, why not cut the bolt head off then use a punch and hammer to hit the thing out and then replace the bolt/nut.

It was a struggle to get the bolt to turn at all so cutting a new notch in it won't help I don't think. The head of the bolt was facing down and the bolt goes up. It's the head and a bit of the bolt that has snapped off. The only way it will come out I think is by drilling it out..

Do you recon it's worth getting a garage to do it?

A garage will have better bigger tools and be able to replace the bolt so solving the problem with money is a good solution. As the head of the bolt has come off, I assume you can't push it out the nut end, which it the first thing I would try. If you could push it up slightly you could then cut the nut off bolt as well., and then push it all the way out.

Nah don't think that's possible really. Was putting some right strength into turning it.. had to use a bar to try and get it off and it snapped in the end. Think it will be a lot less hastle just taking it to a garage.

How much do you think it would cost taking it to a garage?

    Re: Drilling out broken nuts...

I am sorry, I really don't know so anything I said would be a guess, I suggest you go to a local garage (non chain) and ask for a quote if its too much drive away.

    Re: Drilling out broken nuts...

If you drill it out, take it steady to remove the material.

Or just take it to a local fabrication workshop (they're all over, just look for an industrial estate) it'll take them 5 minutes and they'll appreciate the work, plus it should cost you alot less than a garage.

It should drill out nice and easy, they've probably used grade 8.8 as they are most readily available.

If you know the sizes of the bolts give me a shout.
