my mate, 22 just got a MK4 1.6 astra auto... just passed his test with his wife as second driver (on provisional license) and it cost him £650 insurance... i think he got the car for around £1400...
I loved my astra as a first car too, it was mint

I'd look for an old yellow camaro with black racing stripes, in an LA used car lot...
One can never stop saying Thank You
My first car is Peugeot 206. It is a nice choice.
was also wondering what first car to get as im 17 and could take my test but in the end just decided to get a bike in stead so now i have a MT-03 660cc
I love this time of year - there's always a good first car thread to two kicking about - it keeps reminding me of some of the fun times at the wheel of my first motor
However not to get too misty eyed there's been some fine suggestions - and counter points so far.
I'd certainly put the Ford Ka at the top of my list. It's nippy, generally reliable and those big bumpers are ideal for a first-timer.
The Fiesta is similar but with more space for passengers, more modern engines but heavier and I suspect a little less fun.
The only thing I would say about owning a Ford is that yes they are cheaper to repair but they need to be. Generally beyond 60k miles suspension and other larger components begin wear out so don't be surprised if you have to replace suspension arms etc.
For German motors is usually around 100k and the Japanese may get to 120k before similar items need replacing. Granted they'll be more expensive but it will depend heavily on what the cars been through.
French and Italian motors struggle because they have the lifespan of a Ford but the costs of a VW.
I'll grant you it's a fairly sweeping generalisation but it's based on personal experience and observation of friends and family.
Japanese cars have previously had problems keeping their insurance down because of the cost of importing body panels. However the Micra and Yaris are European built and that's kept insurance costs down.
I'd put the Yaris up there with the Ka but for £1300 it'll be questionable if there are any good ones around.
Whatever you do enjoy hunting. I love it!
