    Insurance on modified vehicles

Some of the people here have modded cars, like Lowe for example.

I would like to know what did the mods do to your insurance, and i think i may not be the only one.

If people with modded cars could post their car, mods, with age/NCD info and insurance cost before and after mods that would be really useful.

vw golf vr6 3.1l,modifed everything with nearly 220bhp @ the wheels, its been a gradual evolution so couldn't really tell you before and after premiums.

I'm insured on a modified car policy that goes purely on the cars power and you can do anything else you like as long as its road legal and you tell them about it,i'm 27 now,6 years without a claim, last year it was £950 fully comp, renewed it last week for £670......which was nice

Wont do you any good but my dads wagon is a full chassis up rebuild LWB 300tdi landrover station wagon, with a winch, roof rack 1000w inverter and custom battery system. Christ the fun we had getting that insured. One place reckoned a roof rack was a performance mod, and another came up with "keep it in a garage and we will insure you, O but you cant use the winch or tow a trailer". Ended up going with the national farmers union, full cover and assured value and was well cheap.

    LOL. Thats classic.

Btw, are towbars considered as mods?

Probably. Landrover cant fit a towbar to a 110, or range rover now at the factory. If they did the vehicle would need to have a tachograph fitted, due to its length and carrying capacity. But the dealer can happily fit one once it arrives there. Also worth noting ,you need to take a towing test if you passed your driving license after 1 Jan 1997. Gets worse if your vehicle has lots of seats (8+), you need to take a minibus test and a minibus trailer test But people who passed before this date can hapilly tow a 5 ton caravan on their 1.1 Nova (joking). If you want to be conused read this
    http://www.dvla.gov.uk/forms/pdf/INF30_020702.pdf
And you probably need to inform the insurance comapny of a towbar, might have to provide mechanics certificate as well.

Well, i don't have the towbar on my car, its on my parents. Was just wondering if it counts as a mod. I personally done a minibus training thing at uni, but apparently anyone can drive one even with after 1997 license but not for reward. You can also tow things below a certain weight. We needed to tow a Formula Student racing car in a trailer, and only the lecturers could do that as the trailer was too heavy, which was a bit fo a pain.

Minibus thing is confusing. Last year we were supposed to pick up a rental minibus to take some 1st year students to the race, and the rental place wouldn't give it to us coz they were confused about minibus entitlement too.

After getting tired of hearing "Sorry we can't insure you" I went with Liverpool Victoria. Very reasonable price (as cheap as i'd got anywhere else), not through the roof to spread the payments, £100 Theft Excess, £200 Accidental damage excess. They don't care about mods as long as the engine size is the same, and they don't care about convictions as long as you haven't been banned.

Carole Nash are well worth phoning for a quote, they have twice amazed me with quotes and I stopped looking right away after phoning them. Though it did take them 3 days for their underwriters to get back to me due to the nature of the mod on my most recent quote...

You only need a towing test (B+E) if the trailer is over 750kgs, and you only need a minibus test (D1) if carrying passengers for hire or reward (which means they pay a fare, not that you get paid to drive them).
