Quick update..... cylinder head work

Managed to swap the old carb (Methanol.... well duh !! :p and an inlet manifold) for a set of heads (in need of work) and a Turbo 400 box.....
Heads are Oval port, hence the sale of the manifold (which was rectangle port - and wouldnt have started to work until 6500), in a very sorry state, rusty, bare and need welding and machining due to a dropped valve - BUT - they are one of the best casting numbers for a BBC and flow VERY well....

Inlet on left, Exhaust on right, undercut for greater flow as well, not cheap at £15 a pop though, and im only using these as dummies due to the work I need to do in the ports and chambers

Not yet, havent had a chance (have been on a Team Leader course :eek: :cool: ) hope to get something sorted over this weekend.

Next episode - polishing and porting the heads - im guessing 30 hours work at least

Just gave them a call - not something they would want to take on..... bottoms, awaiting a call back from my normal engine parts supplier, though they WONT be cheap to fix something like this :(

Oh bottoms,
Just got back from Real Steel (my parts suppliers) apart from the damage I knew about in one chamber, there is also damage on the next chamber down, I also noticed that a guide had fractured - so they measure all the other guides...... which are all out of tolerance :(
Total estimated bill just for machining = £450
Total cost of valves = £250
+ cost of springs, caps and retainers works out at BIG £££££
Looks like it will be cheaper to import a built set of alloy heads in from the US......

This car has nearly bankrupted me, practically had me in tears, and make my wonder WTF am I doing ..... but it makes me WANT to run bloody fast, if I cant get this thing to lift its front wheels.... im not trying hard enough :eek: :D

The question is - do I go for bigger valves if I get alloy heads, which are MUCH lighter than than these cast iron ones, less weight = I go quicker :cool:

And it'll STILL cost less to run than a mini-metro ;)

Go for the inported alloy heads, at least they will be stress free, easy to work on and above all a known quantity.

Small update, not much has moved on this - mainly been sorting out the garage.... which has resulted in money my way due to E-Bay auctions (never knew original Mexico badges were worth so much - glad I didnt bin them now!!)
Anyway, one of the places I originally asked, mailed me back with a solution to the damage following the dropped valve, I had been thinking about getting them welded, they have suggested just machining out the old seats and putting new ones in.... which is what im going to do.
This way I learn how to prep heads from scratch, along with a bit of gas flowing - have also bought a set of roller rockers (S/H mind) so the top end is ever so slowly coming back together.....
