    eek eek!!

    Thats expensive! :/

    I might just get a hire car and rag it Then you can upgrade when you feel like it, when you want.... you dont have to worry about trying to sell your car or how much to pay for a car.

    Can you get hire cars for 19yr olds? Can you get them unbranded?

    Most hire places round here want you to be at least 21 (or is it 25?) and have been driving for so long...TBH m8, you may as well keep your Metro for a bit, get some cash behind you and build up some no claims...then when the insurance is more reasonable the used car market is your oyster...

    i'm pretty sure only one of you (the 'main' driver) gets the no-claim bonus, so if your mum is the 'main' driver, then she gets the no claims bonus. if you stick with your mum insured as the main driver you get however many years no claims bonus on the insurance, assuming you haven't made any of course, but if you get your own car with your own insurance, you start from scratch (ie. no bonus).

    no claims is calculated for how long you've had the insurance, not the start of the new year, so if've you've had it insured 2 years from january then, yes, you get 2 years no claims, but not if you've had it insured for say 1 year 3 months just because your into a new (2nd) year.

    If you're on your mum's insurance then i'd say go for one of the offers you get with free insurance, they come around loads, usually on the bottom - middle of range cars, stuff like Saxo's Pug's Punto's etc...

    The advantage is that you can put it in your name so you start building your own no-claims discount, otherwise you'll get to your mid 20's, come to get your own insurance and it's back to £1500+ !!!

    Also, you get a nice spangly new car that should be great for at least 3 years (no MOT needed til then) which is when (usually) cars start going wrong.

    Make sure you don't get something too flashy though as you'll have to insure it yourself from the second year on, also 3 maybe 4 years finance at the Max, 5 years and you'll regret it.

    If you are on your mum's insurance with her as the main driver you need to watch it as insurance companies now try to catch people out if you make a claim. They do things like interview your neighbours and ask who drove the car most and if they catch you then you'll be lucky to insure anthing ever again.

    Of course if you're not on your mum's insurance please ignore me !!

    If it's a new car your after then i recommend the Skoda Fabia TDi - it's got 100Bhp! lovely fast cars - mum has one can get to 110mph with out the need of a hill! lol

    Second hand car - why not a Nissan Micra Super S - Group 4 insurance, 75Bhp, 16valve - you spend 500 on the engine (performance parts) and you can hit 100Bhp no problem.

    I've been thinking of getting a new car soon after i had a bad time with a smart car (lots of wheel spin - plus a 3rd party BMW driver thinking there funny!) toying with the idea of either a 206 GTi or some thing like a vectra V6 - but there fast cars with high insurance groups.

    You need to look at lower end groups - check out parkers guide to see what cars are in what groups - you'd be surprised! one of the vectra V6 models that got released is only a group 11 - the rest are 16!

    please don't get a saxo or a corsa or a escort - if your gonna mod it - they've been done to death!

    imo

    * VW Beetle
    * Dare I say Mini?
    * Saxo, I saw one of the vts's get owned quite badly the other day but they do go some
    * Mk1 Golf
    * The 306 is nice

    I don't know about the hire purchase, I guess you have to work out how much each option is gonna cost per year.

    Plenty of them around, cheap to buy though can be quite expensive to run if they've not been looked after. Insurance will be the biggest problem for you. Group 13/14

    Saying that though I can't imagine you'll find a car which is as much fun for the money though.

    I am on my mums insurance, and what you are saying is perfectly correct.

    Nails it on the head.

    I like the sound of a Pug 106 or Saxo or even a Punto (only like the new shape ones tho).

    It wont be that expensive either, especially over a longer period of time....

    Is it possible to have 0% Finance and Free Insurance?

    Yes, depending on the offer, I got my car on 5 years 0% and blagged them for a years free insurance but because of that couldn't blag a discount on the price.

    The reason they were so up for a cheap finance deal was because the Mk2 version had just been released and they wanted rid of the Mk1 stock. You only like the newer Puntos, do you mean the Mk2 or the latest (facelifted) Mk3 that came out a couple of weeks ago. If it's the Mk2 you like then might be worth scanning some of the Fiat dealerships as they could be deperate to shift the last of the Mk2's.

    As I said before though, try not to go for 5 years finance, i'm in the 5th year and really wish i'd got 4 years instead. Things are starting to need fixing more often now, as to be expected, would be better if I wasn't still paying for the car as well.

    My advice would be to get the model up from the bottom of the range as the bottom of the range tend to be the most common and because of that lose more value, same with the special editions but not quite as bad. The top of the range they usually don't do the free insurance on (except maybe the Saxos) but remember you're gonna have to insure it yourself in a years time. Keep it til the finance is paid, keep it in good nick and preferaby unmodified (well obvious stuff anyway) as it will send your insurance through the roof and reduce the resale value. Then sell it on or trade it in after the 3/4/5 years and get something a bit bigger/meatier when your insurance has come down.

    Hope this helps

    Barakka

    Thanks for the advice

    I think I will need some haggling to be done

    Not sure what car I'm looking for atm, but got a few lined up

    Is it best to go straight to a dealership?
