    So it's official...

Speed cameras are for raising cash, not for promoting road safety

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...herts-34719997

I don't have a problem with variable speed limits to help congestion, or average speed limits for safety reasons, but an arbitrary enforcement just to raise cash....?

Of course, 70mph is the legal limit, so perhaps he should be applauded for vigorously enforcing the law.

I'd be happy if we had a SLA in place for the police.

RTA - must turn up within 20 minutes
    etc.

Fail to do so, £100 fine that goes to all involved.

    Re: So it's official...

If everyone stuck to the speed limit, they wouldn't make any money from speed cameras. This could actually just be a *really* clever way to improve road safety!

Police: "If we turn the cameras on 24/7 we'll make about £1million a year"
Drivers: "They're not making more money out of me" *stick religiously to all speed limits*
Police: "Our extended use of speed cameras has massively improved road safety and adherence to speed limits!"
    Drivers " ...... "

That's easy, start with teaching cyclists the highway code.

Could say the same for car drivers though. And pedestrians, frankly. In fact, anyone who is going to spend any amount of time on or near roads should read the highway code. Cyclists are not alone in that failing.

Except speed limits do nothing for road safety.

    Raise the limit to 85

    rigorously enforce THAT,

Drop it to 60 in bad weather

Pull people for having crap braking distances, fine them

All of that would save lives and raise money.

The last few times I've been on that section of the M1, the variable speed limits have been active, seemingly with not much reason. I think he may already be putting his plan into action.

Oi! Some of us have drum brakes all round and should be allowed the length of the QE2 to stop without the fear of a fine

If you'll excuse the terrible pun, I think Zak was driving at the other end of the scale, ie bumper-huggers
