    Re: I miss Lancia

They are one of those things I aspired to own, but strongly suspect (from friend's experiences) that I'm lucky I never fulfilled the aspiration, because the reality of the whole package didn't live up to the perception from the image. A bit like Ferrari .... real pretty to look at but potentially the source of eye-watering, crotch-shrivelling bills.

I gather the modern crash testing regs force the high rear end, and I guess that forces the side windows to look exactly like that on just about every modern car of that size. Getting boring isn't it.

If you see the "Chrysler" version, I think just a change of grille makes the car much nicer.

My old man used to have an HPE2000 (in beige!). It was a rustbucket but by crikey could it shift!

I know they couldn't survive here.. it was hell for them.
But I miss them... mainly cos I was baraged by a Delta Integrale today and I needed new pants after it passed!
Should they come back to the UK or are they just too... corporate?
Yes I miss them. Trouble is that the cars these days aren't a patch on the old gear, and no I don't mean the - nasty rust bucket. I've tried to keep up with the models and they all seem to lack the panache that the old ones had - even the less-than-spectacular stuff like the Dedra and the Thema. If they fired the entire design team and bought back Italdesign, (or maybe the folks who do the Alfa's these days), then I might be interested, but while they're making jalopies that are downright ugly then the answer's a firm "no".

I'm very biased - the first new car I bought was a Delta GTie (think Escort XR3i but just nicer), me da' had a Gamma Coupe (frightening - that sucka had a Ferrari-badged 2.5ltr engine and went like stink), both me ma and sister had a Y10 Turbo (each!) and I owned a Delta Integrale HFie for a long time (LHD, so when the first sprog came I had to get rid of it. )

I've still got a Lancia brolly in the back of the me Focus, and the keyring on the ignition key is the old "HF" with the red running elephant. Heck, I've even got an old "HF" polo shirt I wear occasionally.

Erm, don't you mean Delta Integrale?

Seriously if I won the lottery, it wouldn't be a Porsche or Lambo for me - I'd be down at Walkers in North Allerton to see if I could get a nice (white, yellow or red) late model Integrale Evo.

That's what I had - in Rosso Red and LHD. I used to use mine for the hour-long daily commute into the centre of Edinburgh. Fine in itself, but the bridge toll booths were a pain - had to get out and run around to give in the money - I lost count of the number of times that folks behind me would beep, swear, etc. Still it was good exercise...

Good thing about the Lancia garages (as opposed to the later Fiat-that-also-do-Lancia that replaced them) was that the folks in them (especially the service dept) seem to be genuinely enthusiastic and really committed to customer service. Wish I could say the same about the Ford garage I went to last...

Had "fun" with mine on the day I collected it - nipping down the motorway at a "fast clip" enjoying the drive, and wondering why everyone was driving so slowly that day. Then I looked down and almost "brown trousered" - the speedo was just about at the 2x speed limit mark! (yes I know speedo's are notoriously optimistic!)

Also remember hearing - from the service dept manager at the first garage I took the HFie to - that they'd had a Lancia demo driver come round with an Evo-2. He took the head mechanic out for a back roads blast, and when they came back the mechanic was as white as a sheet. Apparently the demo driver was really pushing it!

Then again, a leaky sunroof, problems getting parts, and a £3000 estimate from my local (useless!) Fiat garage to get it 100% mechanically meant I had to get rid of mine.

    Re: I miss Lancia

I paid the rent on my first garage by doing odd repairs for the used car front that owned owned it.
They took a really bad gamma as trade in, the bloke was an alcoholic;-)
I think repairs to the Gamma paid my rent for 1986.

I quite liked Betas, but we worked on a lot of Alfas so knew to avoid
    anything made in Italy..

wish the motor trade was like that now.. it's not that the staff don't exist.. it's just all web based training.

Its like that in all industries now though. Sitting at a computer and reading from a screen is not my idea of training. The last few job interviews I had, when I asked about what training was provided I was told "We offer a training program which we run from the company intranet"

I thought training was all about showing you what to do a few times, then you do it whilst under supervision so that if something goes wrong you have someone their to guide you and correct your mistake.
