VW T4 Transporter - Camshaft Cap help!
I have broke one of the engine head cover studs clean off and inside the hole/thread. I need to get a torque wrench! I tried to drill the stud out of the camshaft cap but being aluminium I just made a mess. So therefore I have now taken the whole camshaft cap off and hepe to replace both this and the stud (both shown in the photo) to solve the problem. I'm currently running the engine with out this but it is leaking a small amount of oil via the area where the stud should be.
I have the part number for my 2.4D Crankshaft Bearing Cap (#074 453 - #2 DE ) but also need the studs part number for reference. I have a VW T4 [1998] 1.9TD sitting on my drive and before taking it's engine apart I was wondering if the parts would be the identical/swappable. Can you swap a single camshaft cap from another engine? Instead of buying a new one I could maybe use the 1.9TD one? Are the 2.4D & 1.9TD part numbers the same? I'm hoping the cap doesn't only come complete with the head; as they are line bored perhaps? Can the single bit be changed at all? My biggest fear is that the only way to replace this would be to change the whole camshaft!
Here are the parts i've taken out/broken:

I'm seriously gutted about this. What are my options of sticking a broken stud to the aluminium camshaft as a botch fix? Glue? Sikaflex? Special welding technique?

UPDATE 1: I've found the ETKA link I was looking for but it seems like it'd been offline :(
UPDATE 2: The English version is down but the Russian version is alive and well. "I don't speak Russian" you may then mutter? No problem as Google Translator can get you ETKA in English via this link!

probably you thinking you can glue engine parts together.
Re: VW T4 Transporter - Camshaft Cap help!
OP - do not go gluing anything down on that head, shaft or anything else, it's a combustion engine - bolts are used for a specific reason.
I'm not au fait with the two engines you've mentioned, but with one being a 2.4 and one being a 1.9, I'm guessing the caps are going to be different dimensions.
Best bet would be to strip the head on the 1.9 and compare the physical caps, no? I'm presuming the 1.9 is a scrap/project vehicle?

It's ok i've sorted it now. I used a Heli-coil in the end and it seems to be holding ok. Time will tell I guess?
I did a bit of reading regarding using a new cap and stud but a lot of the results I got pointed towards this possibly seizing the engine up, due to not being bored for my camshaft. I also suspect if it didn't seize it would affect performance by causing more friction etc. That's why I opted for the heli-coil.
Cheers all for the help.

Please buy a torque wrench.
You love those Ts enough to have two of them, spend a few quid on a wrench and treat 'em right.
I've got two, both reversible and both Halfords specials (link and link). Obviously there are better/cheaper ones out there but these have served me well. The bigger one doubles up as a kosh too :D
