Right,
A nice hypothetical question for you all... If you liked diesel cars (both the drive and the mpg) and were after a NEW motor, which out of these would you choose?
VW Golf
Scirocco
Audi TT
Or is there another in the mix?
Leon

what about an audi A3?

James had an Audi A4 which he quite liked - was really nice and pokey (with a kit thing on it to make it pokeyer)
I definitely like the new ones - they're quite smart looking.
Why do I think this isn't as hypothetical as one might think?!
Seat Leon FR TDi
Skoda Octavia VRS.
More practical than the equivilent Leon, higher speced.
Nice to drive, although like ALL of the above, as its part of the VAG group, get used to having everything over-servod, and not being able to tell what the wheels are doing at any point.
Scirocco and TT aren't very practical, Golf is okay but you're paying way over the odds for the badge, and isn't worth it unless you go for the GTI IMHO.
I have one - very refined and comfy. But dull as... to drive. However they're sometimes cheaper than the golf these days, so if you don't mind giving up a bit of driver involvement they're nice - I went for the sportback which gives decent space in the back without making the car much bigger exterior-wise.
On the opposite end from the A3.. Seat interiors are awful, but supposedly the very newest models have finally produced something okay in this respect. Probably most driver involvement of the lot, but hope you don't have any loose fillings or have to travel on UK roads though...
This. As long as you have space to park it it's by far the best choice of the above - build quality, interior, ride, handling, performance, space, value for money new, low depreciation.
And to add some others in the mix:
Ford Focus - a bit overpriced now IMHO, but that's what you get for being a class leader. Better handling than any of the above and ride quality probably matches the best. Very practical, economical to run and cheap servicing. Engines are the weak point but very newest ones are more better.
Mazda 3 - Snazzed up focus without the bill - pay for it at servicing instead, but even sharper handling if that's your thing.
Astra - the very newest model is massively refined, but it's got that badge...
Mazda MX5 - if you're considering the TT or Scirrocco, consider this instead.
Ford mondeo - if you don't mind the hugeness or badge, there's a gem of a car here.
BMW 1 series - if you can cope with a SEATs stiff ride then consider one of these instead - much better to drive, economical to run. Just expensive servicing, insurance, and driver hatred on the road - you are in danger of turning into a tit who can't signal

I have seen a few of the new TT's with Diesel units in, if they could drown out the diesel clatter I wouldn't mind one at all. My next car will hopefully be diesel as after driving a few I prefer the power delivery, which kind of ruins my forum name
Getting back OT
Civic Type S 2.2CDTI
Auris SR180
They both might be worth looking at...
Practicality isn't really a big issue. No kids, animals etc - just me and the GF.
Just looked at this and I have to same I like it Definitely one to bear in mind...
One other thing is that I'm a tall gent (6' 4") and so there's needs to be plenty of driving space and comfortable for long drives.
Audi TT - given it is a both a boy and girl's car
