Unfortunately you have to start with Old Bangers... only for a year or so as once you've got that one years no claims the insurance will drop like a rock. (also I believe you're not far off 25?? it'll go down again then...)
A group 1 - decent little thing will get you from A-B. I had mine for 7 years before I got my new car (Dizzy <3)
Next will prolly be a Lancer Sportback (for the waftability and more space) before I go the whole hog and get the Evo
I would always suggest a Nissan Micra - good and reliable cheap little cars. can pick up a good second hand one for £600-£700 which will do you for the work commute and the odd long distance for a year or so while you save up for a new one.
1st time, from memory I had either 4 or 5 minors. Before that I just couldn't be bothered - anywhere too far to bike is a train ride!
But frankly I handed my man-card back in voluntarily when I was about 20 - like I'd want to be associated with you dodgy lot
p.s. @ Tigs: if he buys a Micra he'll never get his man-card back
My 1st car was a Fiat Punto with £800 insurance but that was back in the day about 11 years ago when insurance wasnt a Rip off!

Not that Dave and Fin can talk - Fin drives something french and Dave drives a Civic Diesel... neither are qualified to comment.
hey, a car is a car - make sacrifices now and they'll pay you back later. Not ONCE did my micra break down in 7 years and 3 learner drivers. A couple of scuffs - but wasn't worth worrying about as it was a cheapen.
if you need a car to get to work and back (like me) then you need to be sensible about it and not go throwing money down the drain.
and so what if you pass after the 1st/2nd/3rd time - it's not a competition... different people learn at different rates
Indeed Tigs, but im 6ft and not small in the waist, have sat in a micra and just didnt feel comfortable in the slightest

Something like this would be ideal..as I hope the insurance wouldnt be too bad..Hoepfully.
tbf, as much as I loved my Rover 414, I don't think I'd recommend picking up a cheap second hand one really. It will breakdown and cause you heartache. They're only worth it if you really like them (which, for my sins, I do).
Tigs is quite right that you want something small, cheap and reliable. Common sense before manliness is the way to go
Yeah, something like that Corsa is definitely what you're after...
Which - if you're a man - is a difficult skill to master....
(and I didn't say a micra was the be all and end all - but I have had a VERY good experience with one... my sister went through 3 saxo's that broke down or needed extensive work... BUT Corsa's are horrible...)
Are there any older Colt's about? they're generally good on space.
it's difficult to work when you've got something like that on your mind (house)
Well I prefer my Corsa to the Fiesta I had, but that's maybe cos of the extra power more than anything (1.4 Fiesta Zetec vs 1.8 Corsa SRi)
You don't necessarily need to start with an "old banger" as such - much more important w/r to insurance is the engine size.
Start with a 1 Litre engine and you'll see the insurance drop right down..my first car 4 years ago was a 2004 Peugeot 206 1.1, cost me £800 to insure (this was a year and a bit after passing my test, at 19)..and i've actually still got it as its a good runner (despite it being a peugeot) and now even cheaper to insure (last year was £400).
Of course an old banger that is also a 1 litre will be even cheaper..i'd advise just staying away from anything quick for now or you are almost guaranteed to be in the £2000ish bracket for insurance.
My 1st car in this country was the 306 XRDT.

Fitted my 6'2" and errr robust frame easily and was extremely reliable.
1st car ever was a 1976 Torana, a real banger with a 2.8 straight six and bench seats...
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
