    Re: New car help!

I don't need a massive boot, but room for a car seat on the rear seats is most important with my daughter. I will find room for the rest of her stuff no matter what car i choose. I managed with a saxo, so i'm sure i'll figure it out!

I do like the Lexus IS, and as of yet have nothing to say against it. I will look further into it, same with the 159

I do like the look of the lancer, and it never occured to me to consider one. The figures of the octavia vRS are better (acceleration & fuel econ) so will discount that for now.

The budget of £13k is an absolute max, the car has to be seriously impressive for me to spend that much, i would be far happier spending £10k.

I can't recommend an ES, they were never UK cars, import only and weren't all that great. To my knowledge they were a rebadge Camry.

I have a GS300, you can get them very very cheap now, ours was £1300 if I remember rightly, ok it had done 126K when we got it and was 1998 but it had a FDSH and has been rock solid. Spend twice that much and you get a much younger car, spending £10k and I think you will get a lovely car.

Only thing is they are thirsty round town, not scarily but probably not what is wanted. They are fine on the motorway though.

If you want something very fun the GS430 gives you a 4.3 V8 instead of the 3.0 V6 (I want an upgrade!)

The IS is probably the most sensible though, 3 series size, not as common, nice engine (avoid auto though only get the manual) and loads of kit, including one of the best touch screen sat navs you will ever use (same for any Lexus).

    Re: New car help!

Andehh you seem to pretty flexible on choice which is always helpfully. While most of the motors you mention are saloons the Octavia is a hatch and better for it. However does this mean you're just not taken with mid-sized hatches in general?

£11k will see you into a top-spec Civic and I'd guess Golf GTD or A3 let alone the 1-series already mentioned. Volvo's C30 or too slow? The Auris TR180 is no slouch if a little 'chunky'.

Personnaly I find saloons irritatingly limited in practicality. Even our Celica's a hatch that'll take an 8' tree! As a second car however ....

    Other thoughts.
The Accords are great but you're right - the previous generation lacks a little 'wow-factor'. The current version has presence in bundles (and a 170bhp diesel) but still £18k.
The Passat CC and Subaru Legacy (diesels) would be obvious entries but at £16k too much casheesh.

Alfa's 159 is very pretty if you can stomach the depreciation. But then again it's much newer for the cash. Certainly worth a test drive.
If value was important I'd suggest the Seat Exeo - it's a refined last-gen A4 with the latest diesel motors. The vRS would certainly trump it for appeal though.
Briefly on Merc's. Not a CLK? Too frumpy maybe but the 270CDi and 320CDi are fabulous donkeys.
The current Mazda's 6 has a great engine and is just as accomplished as a Mondeo. The Sport looks very tidy too which helps.
The IS is available sub-£11k so should be right in there. Looks great and the motor has alot of poke.
Finally for now how does a post-facelift 9-3 sound? I know two very happy owners though like the Mazda 6 at this price - I wonder if a 150bhp diesel is really enough for you!

On the subject of BMW's. My sisters 530d Touring (Y-reg) blew its turbo last week. At £1500 (assuming no further damage) it's painful but a friends 2004 Stilo broke its selespeed gearbox and that was £3500!
Perspective is everything I guess. Is £1500 on a 10yr-old £35k luxury car really that bad? It cost the same for a colleagues 115bhp Golf Mark IV TD for example.

Would I recommed a Beemer? If you have a good quality dealer then yes.
Fact is the engines go extremely well and day-to-day cost less to run than their direct rivals.
My parents are on their 3rd and will be considering a 4th when they replace their curret 530d. For many they're just right.

Personally I always hope there's something as good but less obvious!

    Re: New car help!

I have a settled on a Skoda Octavia vRS, viewed a couple which weren't up to scratch so moved on from them, but the price vs ticking all the boxes is hard to pass up.

Thanks for all the advice guys, will keep you updated!
