    First car

    Hello all,

So as some of you may know, I passed my driving test back in May (at last) and since then have been looking for a car, while saving, looked at some cars a week or two ago and just looking at them, something didnt feel "right" so I upped my budget.

Luckily for me, I am to recieve and unexpected bonus from work which pushes me up to my £2000 budget, so now I can realistically start looking at cars.

The original list started as follows :-

    Corsa
    Clio
    Fiesta

Quickly realised that I could get a nice Vauxhall Corsa Sport (1.4) to cheaper to buy then the other two, and insure (TPFT), went to look at two corsas and was left unimpressed with them so started looking else where.

My mind is made up on one of the belwo two: -

02/52 Seat Ibiza 1.4 (Would prefer 52 plate due to shape)
    2000/01/02 Peugeot 206 1.4

Relatively low miles and Semi-decent condition are the main things I am looking out for.

There reason I have gone for a 1.4 is, there is only a £200 or so difference between 1.2 and 1.4 insurance wise, so figured may as well go higher.

Insurance on both, TPFT is around £2700 - £2800.
For me, cost wise, it isnt worth/ I can't afford fully comp which is about £3400.

So, out of the two above mentioned, which, if any would you go for?

    Re: First car

Personally i would stay clear of the Peugeot, they run like a bag of spanners after a while and know people who have had lots of trouble with theirs, also they are French.

Seat's are decent motors and you get more for your money. (well with the newer ones anyway)

£2800 for insurance seem like a massive amount for TPFT even for a new driver ....

My Cousin (female) is only 19 and passed her test last month is paying half that, (on a corsa). cant remember who she is with but i can find out.

Correct. I cannot stress this enough. I know three people with 206's; my girlfriend, my dad and my best friend and they have all had problems with theirs.

    I'd go with the Seat.

    Re: First car

Hmm looks like Seat it is!

I have looked at numerous comparison sites as well as phoning companies and going on their respective websites and they all come out the same, so unless I am doing something drastically retarded, then god only knows.

I am putting it down to my age and area at present to be honest. 25 in September so will hopefully see a drop then. But either way, I am going to have to bite the bullet and just go for it I think.

    Re: First car

Make sure the Ibiza is the 1.4 16v (if insurance permits you to have one) - it's a tinny car and the engine isn't anything special, but up on the revs it's nippy.

Blimey, assumed you were 19 with a quote like that.

Another vote to avoid the Frenchie here.

Kit cars can be very cheap to insure if you don't mind limited mileage and a car that leaks water a bit in the rain

What bout something like this... (not checked the distance tho...)

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01028363573006

I've got one of the newer ones - they're less well known - but as a whole they seem to be built to last. Mine is 4 years old and never had anything wrong.

Female drivers are a much better insurance risk, I'm afraid I paid about £1600 on a Rover 414 despite being 30 when I passed my test! Insurance, it is not so cheap...

I'd join the chorus of "Get a SEAT" too; not from personal driving experience, but my sister used to work for them so I've passenged in a lot of different SEATs and have always found them *very* comfortable. And given the way my sister drives, they must be pretty nice when you're behind the wheel...!

I'm an idiot - you said new shape, I presumed you meant the 6L. The 6K2 has the 16v 1.4 too so if you can get one, go for it.

The cabin is different and thankfully you've got a better put together car than the previous model (6K).

Mrs mycarsavw has a 6L 1.4 16v and loves it

Get the Seat They look like nice cars. I think his insurance is so high because of his location (Manchester) may also be worth adding a female driver to your policy (your Mum for example) if she has been driving for a number of years and has not had any accidents.

Tried adding the mother and it didnt drop the price, due to my area being such a high risk area and then me being male. apparently more high risk.

    Re: First car

Insurance is sooo expensive for guys no matter how old you are with 0 no claim bonus.

Also I think it is not necessarily the case that TPFT is more expensive than comprehensive and so you should check both (if you haven't done so already).

Out of the two, don't go for the 206.

I check both all the time and each time TPFT is cheaper, which is annoying me to be honest.
