So someone just wrote my car off....

...and I'm stuck around 200 miles from home. It's definitely their fault, basically they pulled out of a side road without looking.

I've spoken to my insurance company (Direct Line) who said I would get a replacement car to get me and the family home, and handed over the matter to Enterprise Rent a Car who are closed until Monday.

If I decide to rent one myself are there any guidelines anyone is aware of? I need to be back in London tomorrow, so waiting until some time on Monday is not really an option. Having found out Enterprise are closed, I just called up Direct Line who are now also shut.

Direct Line shut? There should be a 24 hour claims hotline thing if you had an accident!

Re: So someone just wrote my car off....

Thanks for the numbers, but I've tried, and I either get through to someone who can pick my car up (which has already been done) or Enterprise's nominated call centre number who say "We'll get back to you tomorrow."

Bit frustrating all in all. Wouldn't have been so much of a problem if it was just me, but I have the wife, 2 kids and a dog to get back with me.

Are you a member of the RAC or the AA or similiar, you can use them to get you home.

I thought that until my Partner had an accident, all the AA were willing to do was to move her to a place of safety. Anything else they wanted to be paid for as it was not a mechanical problem with the car (The car was a right off).

Ironically the person who was of most help was a passing RAC man (We are AA members not RAC, though I am thinking of switching) he calmed her down and got the vehical out of the road and her safe for the wait for the AA. Who moved her to a layby then wanted for her he sign a thing to pay for being towed somewhere else. (I was a franchise cover person). So she then waited in the layby for the insurance tow truck who gave her a lift to leicester then she was on her own, with a car of stuff and no car!

Whatever you do, keep your receipts for however you get them home, and add it to the claim.

I'd ring back Direct Line - tell them expressly you shouldn't need to be waiting until Monday - what do they suggest, tell them Monday is no good. Have an alternative - flights/train/taxi plus cost - get approval to whack it on claim and use a credit card.

    This

Because it's an accident they can claim the cost from the 3rd party.

Got a letter today from the RAC after my Accord was written off saying they have recovered the cost (of shutting the boot with cable ties...) from the 3rd party so I have that use available again should I need it

You will get a number of calls as they put you on a database ambulance chasers can see about personal injury claims though (although I went with a local company who are commonly rated as the best in the business, got sorted for a hire car, physio and the process was underway within a week (and still getting regular physio for whiplash 2 months on) can pass you their details if you want)
