Question Getting a car on the road.

    Hi guys,

My insurance renewal is up soon, but I don't want to re-insure my bashed up 106, which has it's clutch on the way out.

My brother has an e36 he is no longer driving, it's been standing still though for a while (no MOT or tax).

I know I can't tax it without an MOT and insurance, I just want to confirm that I will absolutely need to get it insured before I can take it to the MOT.

I'm sure it will start etc after we get the battery charged...not sure what additional work it would need though to b e road worthy, brakes is something my brother mentioned, along with the clutch pedal sitting high (?!).

Also, my 106 is still taxed till March, any way to transfer the tax to the new car (once insured and MOT's) or get a refund?

If I don't insure it, I will have to get it sorn'd - as the new rules say you must have a car insured even if it's off the road

I pretty much have an idea of the answer, just want to double check and get opinions.

    Thanks in advance.

The tax you can only reclaim if you taxed it for 12 months, not 6 months

I'm pretty sure you can claim back each complete month left on the tax disc. it does'nt matter if its 6 or 12 months

Re: Getting a car on the road.

Rob's right as far as I know. You can only claim back refunds on the full months left though. - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...le/DG_10012526

You will need insurance to get an MOT but you dont need tax until it has passed. Although, once it has passed its MOT, you need to tax it before you can use it on the road again.

If its been standing for a bit, check the tyres for cracked sidewalls etc, brakes incase they are stuck, handbrake for the same and then the fluids (water, oil etc) in case of any leaks.

Indeed, Rob is correct, I tax'ed my car for 6 months and something happened shortly after I got it taxed and got 5 months back. But yes, its only full months remaining you can reclaim.

Re: Getting a car on the road.

I returned a disc with 5 months (+ 2 weeks) on it by first class post, they took several weeks to process it and i got 4 months back, i called them to complain having not been made aware of this before sending the disc off, you would think someone would open the envelope and stamp it with the arrival date or something, but they don't seem to make things easy.

Weird I thought it was only 12, must have been because you didn't pay the 10% extra that I went for it

Has for insurance; you can get temp ins policy to cover you for say a day or so while you get the car sorted out (think it cost me 20 quid for 2 days cover)

Re: Getting a car on the road.

Yea I was thinking about that, might be a better option to take while we MOT... and work out if it can be on the road asap or after any needed work! Cheers!
