    Sundays offroading adventures

As i mentioned elsewhere I've been offroading with friends on sunday. We were in the long green Land Rover. There were also 2 short wheelbase landies and 2 suzuki sj's.

The picks are in the gallery and the captions tell our story. I won't go on about it here.

Will just say that the green landy expired on the way home It was running with no oil for half the day. Then we stopped to get some but apparently the oil pump died and no oil was going where it needed to go. Result - one dead landy and a call to RAC 5 miles away from home. My mate wanted to swap the engine for a diesel anyway, so it is not the worst thing to have go wrong in this particular case, but it is still sad.

On the plus side - them little sj's are from 150 quid on ebay and seem to be cheap to run and are loads of fun. As a second fun little car for this kind of money its very tempting.

Before i let you see the pics - a word of caution. When a car is being towed out of mud - stay well away from any ropes or cables. The hole in the rear door of a landy will confirm that.

If you have any questions - ask. Enjoy the pics. (sorry for quality on some, shaky ride and a 50 quid digital camera )

    Not finding it here mate.

Mum used to have a LWB Vitara which was great fun. Brand new and they (the parents) were willing to take it off road at every opportunity.

Now they've got a LWB Shogun that's a couple of years old and it's only seen mud once (except the caravan fields )

    Figure that out.

We were the last car in the convoy. So when we lost the wheel, and stopped i took the radio and said "we lost a wheel, stop and give us a hand please". First they wouldn't believe me. I had incredulous voices saying "Lost a wheel?" (are you sure?...) Was funny. For a moment there we thought we were done for the day, but it didnt seem to have caused any damage so we took some nuts off other wheels, tightened em all a bit more and carried on. Its good it went were it did, going slowly on tarmac, reasonably straight and with no oncoming cars, coz we stopped kinda in the middle of the road there. Good job it wasnt anywhere fast is all i can say. As to why it came off - probably all the vibration of offroading loosenned the nuts.

The snatch thing was scary though. Went through metal like butter. Dont pull with a soft top!

it is seriously good fun, I used to have a series 2 lightweight (tax excempt!!!) long time ago, can't actually remember why I stoppped :/ I was actually looking at getting another landy for off roading, but am delaying it a while as the governemnt are trying to reclassify all green lanes as not suitable for vehicles... If they do, thats a lot of 'off road' that becomes unavailable so go sign the petition against it now

Basically, when you get your beastie stuck in a horrible bog-hole, up to the sills in mud, and the wheels are just spinning, then you aint getting out on your own. So. You tie one vehicle to the other, with a bit of slack in the rope... and then both of you just let rip and the rope gets tight very quickly (the snatch) and that jerks the stricken vehicle out of whatever predicament it's in. Usually... at least, thats the plan anyhoo....

Sounds ( and looks) like in this 'incident' the rope came off the stuck bloke's car and fired into the back of the landy at a rate of knots... musta made a right bang that..

Aye. Thats the way it was. Only thing is that the rope was fairly elastic, so it was like a big rubber band. Imagine getting slapped by a rubber band. Now imagine that the rubber band is inch in diameter and you are there. Fortunately everyone was well away and the driver was fine too.
