    Okaaaay, so insurance...

So, its that time of year again, last year I was paying £48 a month to insure the Cav, this years renewal comes thru and thats jumped to £70 a month..

I decide to go back to the meerkats and get a new quote (same car/details etc as last year) and its dropped to £39 a month, ideal..

Anyways, mate of mines selling an old Saab 93 weasel, lots more mpg, slower car etc etc, wants £350 for it, seeing as I put £70 a week in the Cav an oil burner sounds like a good idea..

However, the insurance on the Saab is more than the insurance on the Cav..

What the feck are insurance companies on like, is it available over the counter or do I need to get a prescription?!

    Re: Okaaaay, so insurance...

is it to do with car grades? or perhaps people in a specific car are crashing and claiming more than the other car? imo its all a scam regardless..

The good news for me is that I should be moving house in the next few months and my insurance will drop from around £900 a year to about £600 a year. This is a massive drop from the £1100 I paid 2 years ago!

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. I moved to a lower risk area and my vans insurance company gave me £180 refund but, my cars insurance company said there was no price difference but, they charged me £52 to change the address on the policy

Now the costs of insurance on based on so many different statistics it is hard to work out what car to buy to get the cheapest insurance. In the old days if you didn't want to pay much on insurance you bought a small car with a small engine but, now they factor in the likelyhood of that type of car being involved in accidents based on known statistics for that vehicle.

    Re: Okaaaay, so insurance...

...given the cold snap recently, how much do you think premiums will go up this time...?

I've just renewed, and I found my premium dropped £300 against the previous year. That said, my renewal quote from my then insurer was more than the previous year (to the tune of £50). So I saved around £350 against the renewal - not bad for half an hour on the internet and a phonecall.

    Due to the weather, nothing.
It's still the cost of PI claims that are making it rise for everyone.

Yeah that annoys me as well, theres a lot of "something for nothing" claims going around at the mo, but then the same people moan about the rising costs, dip****s..

Also I think theres a lot of companies out there that are trying to get as much money in as possible to top up the holes in directors/shareholders pension funds that were hit during the resession..

    Re: Okaaaay, so insurance...

Get a credit card and pay the insurance off in one go with that. Sometimes it can chop off as much as 25% from your premium.

    How old are you?
How long have you been driving?
    How many years NCB?
Which postcode grade do you live in? http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com...risk-list.html
    Do you have any points/convictions?

Try adding your mum to the policy as a named driver, see if that changes it at all.

    Run through these sites..

    moneysupermarket
    comparethemarket
    confused
    elephant
    admiral
    bell
    directline
    aviva
    post office
    tesco

Also, check this site for tweaking your job title for the cheapest quotes

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ins...ce-job-picker/

It'll take about 20 minutes if you hammer through them.

I highly recommend creating a new email address to do this! (to stop spam) and use a fake phone number. If you take out a quote, update your email&phone number when confirming the details

I find Admiral give the best quotes for me.

Avoid places like Swift cover unless you absolutely have to, they don't have proper windscreen cover etc.

If you know how many miles you'll be doing roughly, then be as accurate as you can.

I'm 28, 7 years NCB. Integra DC2 (Group19). Mine's around £410 with Admiral paid off in one payment. Monthly payment quotes were around £550+

I don't want to make anyone sick, but a couple of years ago, I got a quote on a Jag S-Type R, doing 5k miles a year (only go to station and back, plus 1 or two road trips a year), and it came in at £328 for the year. I couldn't afford the car, never mind the running costs, but I can afford to insure. Me 1 World 0.

Two years ago, the wife's polo (55 plate 1.2) cost the huge sum of £121 to insure for the year. Fully comp for me and her, 10k miles, protected noclaims.

I remember my parents paying more for a 1lt metro in the early 90s!

I can insure the cav on a classic, mileage limited policy for £230, but thats of no use to me or anyone else, just thought I'd throw that out there
