Pretty much. Seems to make a difference to the way people drive as well - instead of driving to what they think their ability is, they are more driving towards what the insurers say is safer (there is plenty of feedback on what driving manoeuvres affect the premium). That mirrors some (certainly not all) of the changes you get as you become more experienced and realise that driving is very little about your ability, and more about how you present a predictable behaviour for other drivers to anticipate for example.

It's more about theft claims - you live in a dodgy area the chances of you making a claim for theft of your car are much higher.

Likewise for many cars the value of the car is irrelevant (this is particularly so with third party cover). They're not worried about your car, they're worried about what you might hit.

Unless the law has changed (and it may have as it was a long time ago I covered this), you aren't exactly forced to buy it. You can (or used to be able to) "self-insure".

All you had to do was put down a "bond" of about £500,000 with the government. Needless to say, not many individuals do it.

It used to be not that uncommon among very large fleet operators, though.

So there we have it, the government creates a scheme that is genuinely helpful to the public and the insurance companies abuse it to shaft more money out of people.
I also don't believe their 'statistics', everyone i know that has done the course has started being a lot more responsible.

I also don't believe that speeding is necessarily inherently dangerous. 'statistically' accidents are not generally caused by people speeding.

I've not been on it myself, but I know people who've been on it and they've said it's very good and has made them more careful.

It comes back to the age old issue though that no one wants to tackle: We urgently need more traffic cops that are pulling over bad drivers. I'm sick and tired of seeing people who don't know how to use indicators, or think the middle lane on the motorway is the default one.

    Na I haven't either.

Indication (or lack of) has been driving me nuts recently. So many people just driving around, switching lanes, coming on and off roundabouts with no indication. I don't understand it at all, it's not even hard or confusing!

Don't get me started on MLMs!

    Re: This is interesting....*car insurance*

I've just been quoted a bit over £500 fully comp for a 2007 BMW M5 valued at £30,000. The joys of a country with non-mandatory insurance where insurers have to compete for your business and the most personal questions are about your age and gender. No questions about occupation, number of aunts, left testicle height etc. I still can't get any quotes under £4,000 for the same car in the UK.

At first I was against the idea of not having compulsory insurance. In theory mandatory insurance keeps unsafe drivers off the roads and it makes sure everyone has some way of paying up. But it's getting ridiculous in the UK to the point that it's pricing everyone off the road.

I've had UK quotes on my Fury around £300, which isn't bad for a car that should do 0-60 in under 5 seconds. I haven't had any quotes for it in New Zealand but I expect it won't be a lot. I'll find out in a few months when it gets here.

    Re: This is interesting....*car insurance*

My renewal just come through and it's shot up to over £1k with no changes from last year.

Confused.com is showing I can get it down to ~£840, which is 'better' but still a too much. They also want one or the black boxes installed even though I've been on the road 5+ years on a motorbike and managed not to kill myself - not going to happen, so one to negotiate. I barely do a few thousand miles a year, but there is basically no discount for anything under 10,000 miles when insuring.

If it wasn't for the fact of needing a car for moving stuff about and being 'professional' at work, I'd not have a car, only a bike. My Bike premiums dropped about 30% every year until they hit ~£80.

Try Adrian Flux, Footman James, or Frank Pickles. They do limited mileage policies and usually have a reasonable discount for doing less miles.

    There is.

Go through a proper broker, and limited mileage policies exist. Sub 10k exist, and 3k or under. It's what I've got the Nissan insured for and it knocked some off.

    ^This.

Also give Sky Insurance, and A Plan a try.

Probably should have said 'barely exists with current web based searches'. Changing from 10K down has negligible effect on my premium on Confused and GoCompare

I should look into brokers...they just all (?) appear to be phone based. I really don't have time for it - I just want to go to a website, input my details and have it done for multiple companies and then buy it within a click.

    Maybe I'm asking too much

I did a little check in preparation for moving there.

I got an online quote through direct line for a Frontera Sport, They quoted me nearly 1500 pounds fully comp.

I then went to tesco finance and got an online quote from them for the same car with the same answers to the questions and they quoted me just over 500 pounds so pretty well a third.

So I would say getting a quote through tesco may well be worth it.

Have you tried moneysupermarket.com? It's likely you'll get the same prices, but some insurers do seem to give better premiums on certain sites... I think Admiral/Elephant/Bell give better prices on this one...

    Yes yes you are!

You want a cheaper price you've got to work for it.

It really doesn't take much time, and you'll be dealing with people who actually understand cars, and you'll be treated less like another number. Plus the price will usually be cheaper, and you can get various discounts if you're a member on various car owners clubs. So win win tbh.
