Finally Bought My (almost) Dream Car!

In 2004, my dad and I went to look at a kit car manufacturer for sale. Ever since then, I've been aiming to own one. They don't have the quality of supercars, but they do have good performance for a low price.

It's a Fisher Fury. This one has the Le Mans bonnet (my preferred choice), a full windscreen, and doors. The engine is a 1700cc Ford Crossflow, which needs the carburettors tuning up. I have no idea what the 0-60 time is, but I'm guessing a bit over 6 seconds.

I say "almost" dream car - I wanted one with a more powerful engine, but with insurance and inexperience, it might be for the best to start with this engine. I was planning on doing an engine swap in the future. I had a blat around some country lanes and I can certainly tell the difference from my usual 320d touring (surprise, surprise).

It has quite a few scruffy bits and pieces, but they're easily fixable. The biggest concern for me is that the exhaust doesn't line up with the exhaust hole (the metal plate on the sill) so some of the fibreglass above it has a hole melted through. Most of the rubber trim is easily replaceable.

It's a great car for people who love attention! Half a mile away from the seller, a bunch of kids on the side of the road waved and shouted "Nice car!" Half a mile later I was filling up in a petrol station and someone came over and said "Nice motor, did you build it yourself?" Errrm, no... Driving around town, I had a lot of people waving from the side of the road.

I've been describing it to people as a sort of cross between a Mazda MX5 and an E-Type, but I think the front of the D-Type is closer.

And yes, it is fun.

Well I have driven both an MX5 and a D-Type and can say if its a mix of both it will be a lot of fun

I'd rather not, but I got a good price that was relative to the engine. It was cheap enough that I have some leeway buying a better engine and generally tidying it up.

I'll be going to the Stoneleigh show tomorrow. I might need earplugs because it's a bit loud on the motorway. The bolt-on windows make a big difference in that respect, but they're a bit awkward to store away.

I spent some time today getting the exhaust to exit in the right place, but it seems it has slipped back a little at one of the pipe connections. I couldn't move it forward so I had to bodge it by making the exit hole a bit bigger. I'll be looking for a bigger exit plate tomorrow anyway, to hide the melted hole.

The engine really needs tuning. It's awkward to start from cold, idles at 1,500 once it's warm, and backfires a lot when I lift off the throttle. I can fiddle with the carbs but there's no point without a rolling road.

I did a very rough 0-60 time today but I missed second gear and got 6.9 seconds. So I think my first estimate of just over 6 is about right. I can't accurately use a stopwatch while holding the wheel and changing gear, and using a passenger would add too much weight.

....or there are dyno apps for iPhone and Android using the internal GPS and accelerometer.

Very nice mate, I'd love a Fury. Presumably if it's got a Crossflow ATM there'll be a type-9 or MT75 behind it- so you want to be looking at bolting in a 2-litre Zetec I reckon. Donor Mondeos start at about 100 quid. Using the Mondy ECU, intake etc with a cone filter you're looking at 140-150bhp, and 40+ mpg in normal use. With bodies and aftermarket ECU- 170bhp.

If you have a bigger budget though- Hayabusa engine. Roughly the same power, all up weight of about 90kg including gearbox. There was a Fury in PPC magazine a few years ago with one- it had a big turbo too for 300+bhp.

I drove down to Devon today. Earplugs and a small cushion were a big help. I had to put the hood up half way down the M5, and that was when I realised how daft it is. There's a lip in the hood to go over the plastic window, but at motorway speeds the window just gets out of the lip and flaps around outwards. I've been thinking of some kind of clip-on winglet to blow the windows inwards. Just like a bit of trim down the length of it that slightly bends outwards in a subtle way.

Also, I absolutely will not be using the roof while going to a public place...

A Zetec should more or less just drop in (says he with the air of total confidence of the man who reads a lot of car mags but has never attempted anything more difficult than changing a suspension strut ). You could even use the carbs you have if you don't want to spend a long time mucking about with wiring. Get a manifold from Bogg Brothers. Megajolt or something for the sparks. Break the Mondeo donor and stick it on ebay and it will cost you pretty much sod all, I would have thought.

Lovely car, used to see a red one near here and was tempted to get one at one point.

Carbs are a pain, struggled with them in my youth and am glad they are generally history tbh.

You should be able to make/buy a pressure meter to get the carbs balanced which can make all the difference in a multi carb car. Beyond that, I would have thought swapping for a zetec would be the obvious choice to get a more modern ignition and injection system.

Edit to add: whatever the 0-60 time, within a year it will feel slow. Just enjoy it
