the B5 isn't the less responsive one. its the one with the two turbos strapped to the free revving v6 engine. not the v8 that cokes itself up after 30k.
and i hope you don't really buy cars on pistonheads. i thought everyone knew about the pistonheads tax.

I was talking about handling not engine responsiveness. And yes I'm well aware of the PistonHeads tax thanks, just used it for a quick & dirty look up.

The 335I is already a firm favourite especially as it's available as a convertible as well as a coupe

Budget is an issue on them though

    Re: Sporty car suggestions

How comes the Boxster was so expensive? Mine costs me £500 a year or there abouts to insure.

335 is a good suggestion, or alternatively 135i?

New area is quite a bit posher than the old one, lots of people have 'fun' weekend cars (guy a few doors down has a GT-R), but the boxster is coming out at about £900 insurance

135i is totally out of budget, 130i isn't though but I'd be stuck with the hatchback

    Re: Sporty car suggestions

Have you tried the usual suspects - Admiral, Elephant, Sky, etc.? Admiral came out best for me...

Thinking about it, what year Boxster were you looking at? I've got the 987 (2005-2012).

The 350z is a good shout, or alternatively has the 370z fallen into budget?

    It's a 2000, that might be why

Edit: or not, a 2007 2.7 comes in at 900

    DC2 or DC5 Integra

Very low running costs for the performance

BMW Z4 3.0l (I'm not keen on the look of the Z3)
Mazda RX8? (Not sure on reliability/servicing costs with the rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishel engine)
Is it really coming down to a slightly quick BMW?

Hate to say it, but the original list was a lot more interesting. I mean a Chimera is a head turning aspirational car, the sort of thing that makes you feel alive every second you are in it. From there to a 130i, seems like you went out for a vindaloo and came back with a bag of chips (hold the salt and vinegar)

I am not saying the BMW is a bad car, far from it and if you were using it every day then that would definitely be the tool for the job. But will people give you a big thumbs-up when they see you driving? Will just a blip of the throttle make you grin like a loon? If you turn up at a car show, will you get diverted out of the spectator car park and into the display area? I suspect not. There will be plenty of time for BMW ownership if you are fortunate enough to start a family.

If you do test drive something exotic like the Chimera, try to take the gf and make sure she gets a ride. It isn't like going from a hot hatch to a hotter hatch, some cars are just a totally different experience, and if she hasn't tried it she won't get it.

I suppose the key is in the name of the thread. Suggestions. not Recommendations. We've all been thinking about it too much, OP asks for suggestions, so we need to stop thinking about reliability, resale, cost of ownership and just suggest something silly.

And the Chimera is that car. crack on fella.

    Re: Sporty car suggestions

if i had 7k right now, i'd buy a corrado and spend the change on a turbo as big as a dog.

or a B5 S4, cos they come with two turbos and an obscene fuel habit.

its probably as well i don't have 7k right now.

I know, but practicality has crept in, and it's hard to deny that a 4 seater coupe is less practical than a 2 seater sports car

I plan to, her current (and mine really) are more like warm hatch territory than hot hatch. Luckily there is a specialist about an hour away where I used to live (even if they are out of the price range it would be good to have a look)

They have the lovely flat 6 Subaru engine and 4wd, should be a lot of fun

You can get it in an estate if you really want practicality.
