This happened to my mates gearbox, he's currently running a 2.0 16v Turbo. Its currently only running at half its power (for very good reasons)
The fifth gear seems to half just exploded
Some teeth from 5th gear.
Yes if you look carefully there is a hole in the end cover.
Luckily he happens to have a 2.0 16v GTE on his drive doing nothing. So he has used the gearbox from that.
After a long weekend it is now back on the road...

ooh nasty. my 5th seized in the van once.. wasn't expecting it, shifted up from 4th at about 45, and nearly went through the window cos it slipped into 3rd.....

I got that once with a company Peugeot 205.
Down the M4 at some speed and then bang.
Dust and bits all over the motorway and everyone changing lanes to avoid the debris.
Stopped on the hard shoulder top check it out and could find nothing wrong. Drove off, up through the gears - oops 5th gear no longer work.
I made it to the garage next day just as the gearbox seized up and it had to be pushed in LOL.
I was half sleepy that third day in London on the way back - maybe I did something stoopid like change down from 5th to 3rd at 80 odd miles an hour ????
